Controversy over Priya Prakash Varrier's song Manikya Malaraya Poovi from Oru Adaar Love gets bigger!

Just around Valentine's Malayalam director Omar Lulu released a song fro his upcoming film Oru Adaar Love, making Priya Prakash Varrier an overnight internet sensation and his song Manikya Malaraya Poovi was on everyone's lips. And just with every other popular thing in our country, the song too faced opposition from a particular religious outfit, suggesting that the lyrics were 'hurtful' and they 'insulted the founder of their religion.' Though in these initial oppositions, the actress Priya Prakash Varrier was left alone, in more recent developments, the 18 year old actress who is tagged the 'wink sensation'  too has been dragged.

Reportedly, a Hyderabad-based Islamic seminary has issued a fatwa against the song declaring that the government should have it removed as it hurts the religious sentiments of Muslims. Added to this, the Hyderabad Police registered a case against Omar Lulu and actress Priya Prakash Varrier for "objectionable" reference to Prophet Muhammad and his wife in his film's song. And while the Mumbai-based Raza Academy wrote to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and  Union Information and Broadcasting minister Smriti Irani seeking a 'ban' on the song, they also held a protest here in front of a Mosque holding placards with messages like,"Stop misuse of sacred personalities." Aurangabad based local NGO Jan Jagran Samiti Maharashtra (JJSM), have also lodged a complaint with the police, demanding the removal of the song from the film!

The Vineeth Sreenivaasan sung, Shaan Rahman composed Manikya Malaraya Poovi is the recreation of a famous 'mappila paattu' (a Muslim folk song genre) that was originally composed by Thalassery K Refeeque, with lyrics by PMA Jabbar. The song revolves around Khadeeja Beevi, the first wife of Prophet Muhammad.
