Breaking - Tamil Nadu theatre strike called off

Before the day 4 of the theatre strike in Tamil Nadu could see its dusk, in a breaking development the state government and the Theatre Owners' Association have managed to attain middle ground. As a result, the longest theatre strike in the history of Tamil cinema has been called off and theatres are expected to re-open from tomorrow i.e. July 7, 2017. As of now, the only thing confirmed is that the local tax has been removed and that the GST of 28% for ticket prices at and above Rs. 100 has been retained.

For those catching up, the state-wide theatre strike broke out when Tamil Nadu did to not follow the example of its neighboring states and decided to avail the clause in the GST bill that allowed local bodies to charge extra taxes. As a result of this double taxation, tax rates summed up to a whopping 64% of the ticket price and stake holders like the producers, distributors and exhibitors were left with a meagre 36%. Now with the local tax removed, the idea of Save Tamil Cinema with a One Nation One Tax strategy seems to have been implemented. However, the issue of ticket price revision still remains unanswered.
