BO Data - Thuppakki crushes other Diwali movies

Thuppakki has crushed other Diwali release movies based on individual box office data gathered from 8 multiplexes in Chennai, Coimbatore, Bangalore and also from overseas territories. Even though STR's Poda Podi got good reviews, it did not stand a chance even in multiplexes where it had the best shot given the urban theme of the movie. Podaa Podi's collections in most of the multiplexes were less than 25% that of Thuppakki in Chennai and Coimbatore (ratio is much lower in Bangalore).

Ammavin Kaipesi could register negligibly low collections in multiplexes. Thankar Bachchan who was complaining about Tamil audience not supporting good movies must now be regretting his decision to clash his movie against big stars. Both Poda Podi and Ammavin Kaipesi has one more week to show some signs of recovery before Neerparavai and "Naduvula konjam pakkatha kaanom" take over all its screens. With Thuppakki in no mood to loosen up, chances are looking bleak for other Diwali movies.

Overseas Markets (US and UK)

In the Overseas markets, all the collections come during the first two weeks. With Thanksgiving long weekend in the US, Thuppakki is emerging as one of the top 4 Tamil movies of all time in the US Market. Poda Podi which was shot entirely in London brought home lower than expected box office collections. In the US market, Poda Podi was abysmally low. The movie was watched only by a total of roughly 175 people in the entire country. Poda Podi will not be able to recover the tax, theatre rent and print costs (US Distribution rights will result in 100% loss). Podaa Podi will go down as the lowest revenue generating movie in the US box office for a top rung star in Tamil. Ammavin Kaipesi did not release in any of the overseas centers.
