I think the film was mostly driven by its terrific screenplay and performances of the cast especially of Arvind Swamy and 'Mithran' Ravi. Jayam Ravi did much better than Arvind Swamy in some crucial scenes like bug scene and towards the climax. Arvind Swamy also very good.Editing was razor sharp but felt the story could have still more substance and thrills. The biggest plus points for the film apart from the performances and screenplay is the music of Hip hop Tamizha. Kadhal cricket and kanala kannala linger on in your mind even after the film is over. The bgm is perfect. The film does make you think about the system inspite of being an entertainer which deserves appreciation. (more)

The feeling you get after watching a good movie when you come out of the theatre. Yes that one. Cop story. Sleek thriller. Great Screenplay. Classy Villain without any punch dialogues, doesn't get angry, doesn't smoke or drink still looks brilliant. Arvind Swami is too good. (more)

Its not easy to make a movie where people will remember the character(s) name even after years and what Mohan Raja has achieved with Thani Oruvan is introducing such characters Siddharth Abimanyu & Mithran. Im not sure about Mithran, but this badass SIDDHARTH ABIMANYU going to be one of its kind. The cool villain who never shouts for anything but sometimes with a evil smile does his job done. The movie has equal space for Good and Evilness. What makes Thani oruvan even more special is the psychological treatment for the cat and mouse game between the two characters than a real dishyum dishyum. Im not sure if any other actor would have accepted to play a role where the villain has chances to outscore him, that should be the trust Ravi had on Raja, or it should be an intention to give a good product Another department which excelled and gives lifeline to these characters are Subha's Dialogues - Sharp as a knife, their dialogues takes the movie into whole new level. Hip Hop Tamizha's background score elevates the movie. Over all Thani Oruvan is an intelligent work from Raja and team What if a good and bad admires each other and challenges each other in their way? - "Thani Oruvan". (more)

Thani Oruvan.... After the much hyped flaunting all over social media, I gave it a shot a couple of days after the release and the movie lived-up to all expectations...Not sure if its a coincidence that Director Raja got rechristened to Mohan Raja, so does his style of making remake movies.... Undoubtedly "What a change-over mama" moment for Raja.. I mean Mohan Raja... You are impressed right from start ... the twist that unfolds, when we all expect Thambi Ramiah to take charge of the crime, vouches that this movie is gonna be an outlier... The best thing that had happened to Raja is cast of Arvind Swamy... Man..... What a stylish appearance.... a suave antagonist Tamil cinema has ever seen.... Undoubtedly the best find of Maniratnam.... He juz transcends all that you would expect out of a negative character.... This is one of those rarest movies where there is literally no physical fight between the hero and the villain, yet their confrontation every time keeps you glued to the screen.... BGM score by Hip Hop Tamizha Aadhi perfectly augments the script and this guy would definitely be on the lookout in the industry... Screenplay by Raja and Subha is the real backbone of the movie, a script that has carved a niche for itself.... Definitely a remake material, but this time Raja is on the creator side... Jayam Ravi has done his role with the needed perfection and precision and has groomed his skills multifold... Nayanthara, the female lead has better things to do in this movie than just dancing to the tunes and add to the glamour quotient... Thambi Ramiah, playing the father/politician role, puppeteered by Arvind Swamy, provides the comic relief just in right dose.... There is a big conspiracy behind small crimes, which are perpetuated to cover-up the bigger one, is the tag line of the story and the hero goes on to reveal the big picture of the organized crime syndicate and its mastermind... The success of the director lies in perfectly balancing the role of the clever villain and cleverer hero and I hope Raja had done justice..... a movie not to be missed on the big screen and worth your 120 bucks..... I had no expectations on this movie as last two Ravi's flick RJ and Appatakkar had given torcher moments. But i regret for not watching ths movie on first day. Whatta screenplay. Never felt a dropping point anywhere as it is so engaging and entertaining. Rocking villain Arvindswamy has completely stolen the show. The style, attitude and even small mannerisms are simply perfect. Special kudos to Ravi for choosing this script. Hiphopthamizha adhi had done an excellent job in musical part. Still i cant come out of thani oruvan theme. And finally the captain of the ship, director raja had proven what he is capable of. No wonder that this movie has received positive reviews all over as the standing ovation from the audience at the end card proves the movie's quality. Thani Oruvan is a Screenplay dependent Movie where It has been constructed by the Writer to his capacity of perfecting with technical weightage that is good. But with only the above mentioned content, the Movie gets stern and mostly lifeless. Thani Oruvan turned out to be a recessive seed planted in a perfectly fertile platform. So, the result is an unattractive growth. The Director did his part to mediocrity. The Performances of leads were above average. Other than these nothing shines in the Flick. 1.5 stars for the technicality in Screenplay and above average Performances. (more)
