Yaamirukka Bayamey Review - Spoofy and Spooky Fun

Yaamirukka Bayamey - Spoofy and Spooky Fun!!!
Bharath Vijayakumar

Laughter and fear seem to be at the polar ends of a spectrum. It does require some imagination to combine the two successfully. Debutant Deekay's Yaamirukka Bayamey traverses this difficult path. How successful is the journey? Read on to find...

Plot:

A haunted house and a group of youngsters is an age old and universal  formula for horror flicks. Yaamirukka Bayamey too has this has the central point. When Krishna decides to use his ancestral property as a resort for monetary gains little does he know what's in store for him.

Cast:

Performing in a film such as this is quite tricky. Though horror finds enough space in it, the USP of  Yaamirukka Bayamey is it's outrageous look at the funny side of horror. The actors cannot look completely petrified nor can they afford to sport a completely casual body language. There is a  middle ground in which they got to perform and the cast of Yaamirukka Bayamey does manage to do this quite well. Looks like Krishna is someone who is extremely careful of trying not to repeat himself on screen. In his short career so far he has shown the promise to pick quite unusual scripts. Yaamirukka Bayamey is a good addition to this repertoire of his. Karunakaran proves that Soodhu Kavvum was no flash in the pan and is genuinely funny in the film. He has these expressions about him that can make him look either innocent or cunning in no time.

Crew:

Firstly it is a nice gesture to showcase the photographs of the technical team in the starting credits. The film is crisp with a duration of just over two hours. The songs are minimal both in number and their duration. The look about these films is also so important. While the eerie feel has to be maintained it also cannot go overboard as comedy is the undercurrent of Yaamirukka Bayamey. The colour tones are interestingly used in the short flashbacks.

Director:

Debutant Deekay has successfully managed to keep the laughs coming. The film does take some time to warm up. The initial 30 minutes filled with some silly gags does seem uninspiring. But all this is soon forgotten once the main plot takes centre stage. The pacing is extremely good from here. There are numerous spoofs played out and yet they do not stick out or slow down the film. Even the initial scenes that were quite ordinary find some relevance towards the end. There are certain dialogues that tend to lean towards adult humour. Some of them are definitely crude. Kanchana is probably a film that comes to mind where comedy and fear went together. But that was more a horror film which had a light hearted first half. But here Deekay has served us a film that keeps us in splits for the most part where horror is actually the backdrop for the humour to play out.

Bottomline:

A few silly gags apart, Yaamirukka Bayamey is an enjoyable and different outing at the cinemas where laughter overrides fear.

Verdict:

Rating:3.25/5
