Amaran Preview: SWOT Analysis of Sivakarthikeyan starrer

Amaran titled after the 1992 Karthik, Bhanupriya movie is an upcoming Sivakarthikeyan starrer, that is set to release on October 31, 2024, marking the occassion of Diwali. The movie, a biopic on Indian army Major Mukund Varadarajan AC, is scheduled to release in theaters worldwide in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada languages under the same title.

Amaran's SWOT Analysis follows:

Strength:

  • The change in the air around Sivakarthikeyan's career is out there for everyone to feel. Not only is the Amaran lead actor being seen by tier 1 stars as the 'next bankable actor', but Sivakarthikeyan's ability of being a crowd puller, has hyped Amaran the most among Diwali 2024 Tamil film releases. Following Maaveeran (2023), and Ayalaan (2024), Sivakarthikeyan is taking the next big step with Amaran, and it looks quite promising.

  • Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI) has done a fabulous job in elevating the hype surrounding Amaran's release with each promotional strategy. The planning that has gone into ensuring maximum theater, and screen counts from Tamil Nadu to USA, is impressive, considering that one of the major fan-complaints with Tamil production houses is their lax in staging, promoting and marketing a movie.

  • Be it the performers like Sivakarthikeyan, Sai Pallavi, Rahul Bose, Bhuvan Arora, or the efforts that has gone into making an authentic army film, plus a biopic, Amaran is very promising at all fronts. Moreover, there is no misleading the audience. Clear expectations have been set that while Amaran is a mainstream film, it is a biopic with family emotions, romance, and war action in equal measures. The team reaching the mainstream Tamil audience with a biopic drama story is the biggest strength of Amaran

Weakness:

  • Unlike in Bollywood or other main film industries in India, biopics are far and few in the Tamil film industry. It isn't too far fetched to say that a good chunk of the Tamil audience shies away from the very term 'biopic' when made in Tamil. Amaran as promising as it looks, is expected to break this barrier once the initial set of reviews flow in.

  • The story of Major Mukund Varadarajan began when he tragically lost his life in the Qazipathri counterterrorism operation in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir. It is also one search away on the internet, which has lead to speculations about a lot of Amaran factors, like what would the movie have to offer or the film's ending. This for now is a weakness for the film.

Opportunities:

  • Amaran is the next step in actor Sivakarthikeyan's career. Unlike other Diwalis, where the Tamil box-office usually sees the release of an Ajith, Vijay, Rajinikanth or Kamal Haasan movies, Diwali 2024 in probably the longest time is seeing the clash of the next generation of actors. Team Amaran has bet on the Diwali holiday, crowds thronging the theaters this festive season, and the audience's mindset that movie watching is a must-agenda during this 3-4 days of celebration. This opportunity is huge for Sivakarthikeyan, and is expected to work big for Amaran.

Threats:

  • The usual threats for any theatrical release in Tamil are piracy, and a lengthy runtime (Amaran's runtime is 2 hours 48 minutes and 56 seconds). In addition, Sivakarthikeyan with Amaran faces box-office competition from movies with potential like the family oriented rom-com Brother (Jayam Ravi), dark comedy thriller Bloody Beggar (Kavin), and period crime thriller Lucky Baskhar (Dulquer Salmaan's Telugu release).
