Muthu (1995) starring Rajinikanth, Meena in the lead is that one Tamil movie which opened the gates for Rajini's popularity in Japan and even in 2024, a staunch section of the Japanese crowd have not forgotten the impact the movie and its soundtrack created in their country. Muthu with AR Rahman for music was the most popular foreign soundtrack in Japan, at the time of its release.
29 years later, the album's most popular song Oruvan Oruvan is etched in the memories of not just fans but also the music composer AR Rahman. Earlier this year, during the audio launch of Lal Salaam, also starring Rajinikanth, AR Rahman had said, "Everytime I set out to buy a land, I am reminded of 'Man is interested in soil, Soil is interested in Man' (lyrics from the Oruvan Oruvan song). I sing that."
Now a 77 year old Japanese named Kuboki San has awed Tamil netizens by singing the song in Tamil during a guest address for MBA Students in Puducherry. Representing Mitusubishi Corporation Ltd, Japan, at the GLOBIZZ'24 event conducted by Pondicherry University Kuboki San took to the dais and broke into a karaoke version of Oruvan Oruvan with clear Tamil diction.

While this Japanese is too good, I find the reaction amongst the so called intellectuals in the podium and the audience muted and unenthusiastic

Japanese are the gems. Though too much workoholic, they live life king size and are the longest living homosapiens on this planet.
