Chennai's Udhayam Theater to shut shop! What's happening with the city's once famous cinema hall

Udayam Theatre is a multiplex located in the capital city of Tamil Nadu. The cinema hall has four showcasing arenas namely Udhayam, Mini Udhayam, Suriyan and Chandran. The 40,000 sq feet Udhayam theatre is located on a 1.31 acre plot, and buzz is that all of this has now been sold to a real estate corporate in the city.

Udhayam theater located in prime Chennai location of 100 feet road in K. K. Nagar, has served cine lovers since 1983. The movie theater complex was built by six brothers, and in 2009, the lone surviving brother - Paramasivam Pillai retained the building within the family by outbidding a Rs. 80 Cr. auction sale. Udhayam Theater had come into auction mode then, following a scramble for property by 53 shareholders of the founders' families.

Udhayam was originally built with three theaters namely Udhayam, Suriyan and Chandiran. Modernization and property feud lead to the theatre being split into Udhayam and Mini Udhayam, and all of the theatres being airconditioned and installing DTS speakers. The current sale to Casagrande seems suggestive that a high rise luxury apartment will be built in the place of these theaters.

Udhayam theater in Chennai isn't the only legacy cinema hall to be going out of business. Many standalone theaters like Albert theater in Egmore, have been struggling to keep up with the rise of OTT and other factors.
