Coolie Preview: SWOT Analysis of Rajinikanth-Lokesh's action thriller!

Coolie with Superstar Rajinikanth in the lead, is one of Tamil cinema's highly anticipated films that is releasing in theaters worldwide on August 14, 2025. Coolie marks the maiden collaboration of the 74 year old veteran Rajini, with the 39 year old writer-director Lokesh Kanagaraj.

Rajinikanth also reunites with his blockbuster Jailer (2023) teamSun Pictures production house, and music composer Anirudh Ravichander on Coolie. With the buzz surrounding the movie on an all time high, here is a SWOT analysis of Coolie

Strengths:

1. Rajini 50 Years - A Cultural Moment:

Coolie's release date August 14, 2025 coincides with Rajinikanth’s golden jubilee cinematic legacy, as his debut film Apoora Raagangal released on August 15, marking the Indian Independence day exactly 50 years ago. If Rajinikanth as the lead act of Coolie is an appeal in himself driving massive fan excitement and anticipation, 'Rajni 50 years' celebration is definitely a cultural moment that creates a celebratory atmosphere, adding to the buzz surrounding the film's release.

2. Sun Pictures - The Goliath Backing!

The Tamil cine industry in the last few years has seen a rise in mass campaigns on social media, the negative impacts of which prompted those in Kollywood to even move courts urging a ban on film reviews for the first three days of a movie's release. For an actor like Rajinikanth, the theatrical audience is cross generational, which means that his movies are more susceptible to attract dissatisfaction, whether deservingly or not.

While corporate production houses are a given with any Rajinikanth film, the presence of a goliath power like Sun Pictures changes things, with respect to handling negative publicity. For instance, just last year Tamil social media would have one believe that an extremely decent thriller like Vettaiyan, which had all the makings of a super-hit movie, was a disaster, and not worth anyone's time in theaters.

In comparison, a crowd non-favourite like Annaatthe (2021) attracted much less trolls or had any impact at the box-office, only because of the backing of a media veteran like Sun Pictures. For an enduring star power like Rajini, the backing of Sun Pictures is a much needed strength in these testing social media times.

3. Lokesh Kanagaraj

Best known for Kaithi (2019)the film that set off the signature action thrillers from the writer-director, Lokesh Kanagaraj most definitely comes with a lot of credibility, and adds to the expectations. He is one of the better filmmakers Tamil Cinema has to offer at the moment.

4. Plot Under Wraps:

Both Sun Pictures and Lokesh Kanagaraj have managed to keep the plot of Coolie under wraps, which is a big strength in an era of almost no spoiler-free movies. Even when Coolie stood the risk being oversold as a 'time travel film', the team quickly responded by putting an end to the genre rumours.

5. PAN Indian Cast & High Production Quality:

Alongside Rajinikanth, the film features Nagarjuna as a compelling antagonist, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir as major scene-stealers, Sathyaraj in a nostalgic on-screen reunion, and cameos by Bollywood star Aamir Khan, and Pooja Hegde.

With a reported budget of around Rs. 350 Cr+, Coolie also boasts of impressive production values, and marketing. The film's impressive technical team with Anirudh Ravichander's music, Girish Gangadharan's cinematography, Anbariv's stunts, look promising so far. Suffice to say, that Coolie ticket looks worth its price right now.

Weaknesses:

1. Runtime:

Right off the bat, Coolie's loaded runtime of 2 hours 49 minutes and 57 seconds sends off the sirens in all directions. Lokesh Kanagaraj's last three films have consistently exceeded the 160-minute runtime, but have they really worked to a T, is up for debate.

2. The Lokesh Tendencies:

Some of the biggest critiques about Lokesh Kanagaraj directed films are that they have a weak second half, and underdeveloped character arcs for prominent actors (Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has openly expressed disappointment over Lokesh wasting his talent/role in Leo). Lokesh Kanagaraj before beginning Coolie did express that he had taken a note of these criticisms, and would be fixing them, since they came not just from film critics, but as audience feedback too.

Family audiences are not Lokesh Kanagraj's primary demographic, and the glorification of violence in his storytelling is what stands between them and his films. Coolie might as well be the pinnacle of this weakness, as it comes with A-certification from the censor boarda first for a Lokesh Kanagaraj film.

Opportunities:

1. Massive Pre-Release Buzz:

Coolie advance bookings are record-breaking, with domestic and overseas sales suggesting a potential opening day collection of Rs. 100 to Rs. 150 Cr. globally.

2. Wide Holiday Release:

With Coolie hitting theater screens a day ahead of the Independence day weekend, in Tamil, and dubbed Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada versions, the movie has the opportunity for a ripe cash in at the opening weekend box-office PAN India.

Threats:

1. Box Office Competition:

Coolie releases alongside another big budget action thriller, and albeit a Hindi film, War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan and Telugu star Jr NTR splits audience attention, particularly in Hindi and Telugu speaking regions. War 2 with its exclusive contracts has also hogged all the premium format screens like IMAX, D-BOX, 4DX, ICE, and Dolby Cine versions, leaving Coolie only with standard format releases both in India and overseas.

2. Piracy and Leaks:

With high anticipation, there remains a risk of piracy affecting Coolie theatrical earnings despite the extensive anti-piracy efforts. On August 11, 2025, the Madras High Court ordered 36 Internet Service Providers across India including telecom giants like BSNL, Airtel, MTNL, Vodafone, Idea, Reliance Communications, and channels like Hathway and Tikona, to block any website that illegally streams Coolie

3. Audience Expectations:

Coolie has been hyped by the team as an 'intelligent film', with a surprise, and an interval to look forward to. Any perceived shortfall in these set expectations, or execution of Coolie overall could lead to mixed word-of-mouth. This is especially a threat considering Coolie first shows in Tamil Nadu begin only at 9 AM, and overseas shows begin a full 5 hours earlier at 4 AM IST.

4. Regional Language Limitations:

Despite its PAN Indian cast, Coolie’s strongest appeal is among the Tamil-speaking audience, and its performance in non-Tamil markets depends heavily on the acceptance of dubbed versions.

Overall, Coolie has strong potential backed by immense star power, an acclaimed director, and significant pre-release excitement, poising Rajinikanth's 171st film as a landmark release. However, Coolie also faces competition in War 2, and high expectations surrounding the Tamil film could pose some challenges. Coolie's opening week performance will be a crucial indicator of how well it capitalizes on the momentum it has going on for itself.
