Raw and Relentless Rajini Ride

Sun Pictures Coolie delivers big for action lovers and Rajini fans alike, with enough merit to keep audiences engaged while sprinkling in well-conceived mass moments for the ensemble cast. Coolie unapologetically delivers grit, gore, and star power.(more)

Rajinikanth's film has too many ideas, but too little impact

Technically, Coolie is brilliant. Be it Girish Gangadharan's cinematography or Anirudh Ravichander's pulsating music, the technicians delivered on all fronts, including sound design, production design, and VFX. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie is an underwhelming entertainer that suffers from overstuffed ideas. Rajinikanth's screen presence and Anirudh Ravichander's music save the film from drowning.(more)

Superstar Rajinikanth Outshines All In A Star-Heavy Film, And No One's Complaining

The film would have us believe that Preethi is a tough woman who has taken it upon herself to look after her sisters in her father's absence but she never seems to be in control. Worse, she is perpetually in need of rescuing. Coolie plays out in a man's world. The likes of Preethi, notwithstanding the amount of screen time she has, is only of secondary importance. So is everybody else in the film and that includes the writer-director himself. It is Rajinikanth the star and Deva the character who call the shots all the way through. Should anybody be complaining?(more)

Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram-lite is scattered and messy; Rajinikanth still packs a punch

Coolie is not a bad film. Far from it! But it certainly is a squandered opportunity. The combination of Rajinikanth and Lokesh should have given the viewers much more than what it is.(more)

Burdened by its own weight, this Rajinikanth-starrer misses paying its dues

Coolie had all the ingredients in place, too, and nope, this is not about the cameos from stars of other languages. It had a simple premise, powered by a compelling, even if hurried, flashback, characters ranging from the zany to the stoic filling up the screen, and decent twists. And yet, for all its highs, lows, and everything in between, Coolie, which aimed for the most super of all stars, ends up being a film that soars high only to crash land with a bang and a half.(more)

Rajinikanth elevates Lokesh Kanagaraj's frustrating action vehicle

There is also the classic trope of the old song reference, this time fittingly from a lesser-known Rajinikanth classic from the 70s that felt well placed. Aamir Khan makes his entry towards the end with a spirited cameo that does bring some genuine laughs, but the desired impact is not achieved. The only time Lokesh cuts to visuals from the much hyped flashback sequences from the film, and those two are the best two sequences in the movie. The desired viscerality comes through, and they do a good job de-aging Rajinikanth for that stretch. One could only wish that the rest of the film measured up to the thrills of those two sequences.(more)
