Director H. Vinoth is busy promoting the release of his upcoming film Thunivu that stars actor Ajith Kumar in the lead. Thunivu, which is all set to hit theater screens worldwide from January 11, 2023 [Wednesday] is H. Vinoth's fifth film. But during a promotional interview with Galatta Plus, the director revealed that like every cinema aspirant, he too gave up on films once.
(Reluctantly) Recalling his early days, H. Vinoth said that it was a random spark that steered him in the direction of films. After doing several odd jobs in Kollywood, he ended up working in R. Pathiepan's office for a year and a half. But H Vinoth found it very tough to grasp the nuances of the job, since he had close to zero experience at this point. So he decided to quit and go back to his non-cinema life.
However unlike his other failed attempts, cinema kept appealing to his 'ego' and H. Vinoth decided to give it another go. Via the now famed writer, director Raju Murugan whose Joker fetched a National Award in 2016, H. Vinoth landed working on the sets of Goli Soda that released in 2014.
L-R: H. Vinoth, Vijay Milton
H. Vinoth says that it was Goli Soda director Vijay Milton, who helped him break the 'overwhelming image of cinema' he had.
"He (Vijay Milton) doesn't give an ounce of attention to the camera. He doesn't regard continuity or other such doubts. He'll have three (Black) Friday cameras, an ordinary monopad, three of his assistants will be hidden somewhere holding that. Vijay Milton would ask to play the scene..He'd finish taking a scene with a very natural atmosphere. The close-ups alone he'd cheat and take somewhere else. This (left me) stunned.. especially with no unit, nothing..
Whatever overwhelming image I had of cinema, whatever secrets its process held, Vijay Milton shattered everything for me. I worked with him only for 30-40 days. But whatever fear I had with cinema, was all gone by then. Paralelly to this time only, I started writing my first script (Sathuranga Vettai) and it was through Vijay Milton I ended up working with Vijay Antony."
Sathuranga Vettai turned to be a dream debut for H. Vinoth, and there has been no turning for the filmmaker since. His sophmore Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru (2017) was well received too. Thunivu is the director's third consecutive movie with Ajith after Pink remake Nerkonda Paarvai and Valimai, that was a partial-pandemic production. Actors like Kamal Haasan and Dhanush have been linked with H. Vinoth's next after Thunivu, but official announcements are expected only post Thunivu's release.
