Annaatthe Songs - Music Review

D Meera Chithirappaavai

D Imman’s album for Rajinkanth starrer Annaatthe is one of the most awaited films/albums of the year 2021. The album is a well-balanced one that offers a bit of everything we expect to see in a rural drama written & directed by Siva. Here’s a detailed review of each of the songs from this thoughtful album...

ANNAATTHE ANNAATTHE | Singer: S.P.Balasubrahmanyam

Lyricist: Viveka

This song is the most expected number from the album as it is the golden stint of SPB rendering his voice for Superstar for one last time.

‘Annaatthe annaatthe

Varen nadaaiyila udaiyila

Kola kola massu”

Hearing these lines in SPB’s voice just reiterates how he has immensely contributed to how the audience has been celebrating a Superstar's into song over the years. On the musical front, the song uses regular sounds leaving no space for experimentation or innovation. However, is it a fitting end to a magnanimous list of songs for this duo (SPB - Rajini)? Yes! It’s instantly catchy & high on energy.

SAARA SAARA KAATTRAE | Lyricist: Yugabharathi

Singers: Sid Sriram, Shreya Ghoshal

Music albums of big starrers are like a game of chess. One move for the sake of the star & one for the sake of the music director. Sometimes, a filmmaker also dictates a move. This particular duet song is a classic D Imman move and the singers Sid Sriram & Shreya Ghoshal are known for bringing out the joyous pain of being in love through their voices and they do exactly the same in this upbeat duet song.

MARUDHAANI | Lyricist: Mani Amuthavan

Singers: Nakash Aziz, Anthony Daasan, Vandana Srinivasan

This particular celebratory piece contributes to setting the mood & context of the song’s placement. The song does involuntarily bring a smile on your face and makes you groove. Despite its regular orchestration, the number is a catchy one. Special mention to the Nadaswaram’s loops that do ring in your head like the aftertaste of a good meal.

YENNUYIRE  |  Lyricist: Thamarai

Singer: Sid Sriram

D Imman is known for his soul-stirring numbers dedicated to the most cherished relationships of our lives. Yennuyire is composed as an anthem for the love siblings share. The song may stay on your playlist if you give it multiple listens. It’s not your instantaneous winner but for sure an interesting song rendered by Sid Sriram. It also carries a hangover of the song “Sengathirey” from kadaikutty Singam

VAA SAAMY | Lyricist: Arunbharathi

Singers: Mukesh Mohamed, Nochipatti Thirumoorthi, Keezhakarai Samsutheen

This powerful song does set a high expectation with respect to the mass elements that the film may offer. This Superstar Rajini starrer clarifies its core intentions further with this chenda melam dominant rustic number like Vaa Saamy that may elevate powerful moments on the screen to a level that’s goosebumps worthy!

A FOR ANNAATTHE | Lyricist: Arivu

Singers: Arivu,Superstar Rajinikanth

Of Late, the audience is highly conditioned to hear a song with Rajini’s dialogues or majestic laugh incorporated in it to make it nothing less than viral. “A For Annaaththe” is yet another attempt at bringing Rajini’s voice and rapper Arivu’s voice along with his lyrics to form a racy track. Overall the song, especially for the whistle bit is here to make it to your next ringtone! This is clearly for all the die-hard Rajini fans out there.

YENNUYIRE (Female version) | Lyricist: Thamarai

Singer: K.S.Chithra

The female version of Yennuyire rendered by K S Chithra may take you back in time. It also shows how a song can change its influence on the listener based on the singer even if the tune remains unchanged. The SidSriram’s version and Chithra’s version offer a different edge to the same emotion.

Overall, as mentioned above the album doesn’t disappoint any strata or category of audience. The album unapologetically conforms to playing to the gallery but the intelligence with which it has been packaged makes every song worth your while.

It’s a well-planned and executed work of music from D Imman that has set the mood for a Thalaivar Diwali’21.

Rating - 3.5/5
