The many firsts of Chloe Zhao - Oscar 2021's Best Director!

Director Chloe Zhao has made history at the  93rd edition of the annual Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars 2021. Her 2020 docu-style movie Nomadland has fetched her an Oscar for Best director, making her the second woman in the last 92 years to win that award. [Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win an Oscar for Best direction and she took home the award for her 2009 war-drama The Hurt Locker].

Chloe Zhao is Chinese; this makes her the first Asian woman and first woman of colour to win an Academy award for direction. Interestingly Zhao who is currently awaiting the release of Marvel's Eternals is also the first director from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to win an Oscar for direction.

Chloe Zhao is the third filmmaker of Asian descent to win the directing award, following Ang Lee (for Brokeback Mountain in 2006 and Life of Pi in 2013) and Bong Joon Hoo (for Parasite in 2020).
