After Rajamouli, Vetrimaaran weighs in on the Oscar winning Parasite!

Around this time last month, hot topic among the Indian netizens was a prominent Telugu director (S.S. Rajamouli) dissing a South Korean movie, which had gained worldwide recognition by winning multiple Oscars. The topic of Bong Joon Ho's Parasite and its historic win at major award ceremonies seems to be still lurking, for one more prominent Indian director has weighed in on the same.

Recently, Tamil director Vetrimaaran was questioned if he thinks Parasite's much-talked about recognition at the Academy's was well-deserved and this is what the director had to say:

"It is all about being at the right place at the time. Parasite's director has had much better movies..Parasite is a take on the capitalist view of life..The way the movie juxtaposes how a common man suffers is what worked in favour of the movie with the American audience; This is the time they (Americans) are questioning their ways of life, their government and this film resonated that (not only for them but) for everyone."

The director whose production venture Visaranai was once sent as India's official entry to the Oscars further added,

"The disappointment over right wing supported political ideologies such as capitalism is a sentiment shared globally. Everyone kind of connected to it and felt morally obligated to pick up a film (like Parasite) as the best film. Also Oscar is not a standard for a good film. I look at the platform as only a medium for gauging a sensible movie amongst the commercially viable films.."

However Vetrimaaran also stated that film festivals such as Cannes are the standard for recognizing good movies and Parasite has Cannes' highest honour, the prestigious Palme d'OR in its awards list.
