MC Weekly OTT Recommendations: Movies to Watch Online!
Bharath Vijayakumar
With social distancing being the ideal and sensible thing to do in these times, one way to keep yourself entertained (more so if you are a movie buff) is to catch up with the latest releases in OTT. Here are some suggestions for the week!

Dia (Kannada) - Hauntingly beautiful!
K.S. Ashoka's Dia is one of those films that reiterates the power of this medium. The film follows the romantic pursuit of its introverted protagonist and the surprises (both pleasant and shocking) that life has in store for her. A pretty straightforward tale with limited characters but Dia leaves you with a punch in the gut feel thanks to some terrific performances that has you invested with the principal characters.

The climax might come across as forced but despite that you would still be moisty eyed! Definitely recommended if you don't mind being left heavy hearted for a while! One of the characters in the film describes the pain that he is going through by comparing it with what it would feel like if thousand men were to stab him all over! That you can literally feel his emotion is what makes Dia not just another film! (Available in Amazon Prime)

Ayyapanum Koshiyum (Malayalam) - High voltage tussle of the male ego!
Close on the heels of Driving Licence, this is another battle between two bruised male egos. But unlike the former, the demarcation between good and evil is more clear here but the film doesn't really take sides. Also both the sides here are heavyweights and after a point you sense that they are almost enjoying the battle and keep extending the foreplay before the final orgasmic rush. Both Biju and Prithviraj are terrific and the mass moments work big time.

The film also touches upon the ill affects of power imbalance, misuse of influence, patriarchy and other issues through this rather prolonged battle of the giants. The first 30 minutes is one of the most tense stretches in cinema from recent memory! (Available in Amazon Prime)

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (Telugu) - Quintessential entertainer!
Trivikram's Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo is the kind of film that you want to watch to have a gala time. An age old plot and a done to death narrative but the film works because it precisely knows what it wants to do and does it with all earnestness. Most importantly, Allu Arjun is in fine form and the emotions click. Brownie points for not getting too melodramatic! And not to forget Thaman's chartbusters!

PS (includes spoilers): The film was thoroughly entertaining but I found it problematic how these films (maybe inadvertently) keep reiterating that the character and nature of someone is tied to whom he was born to rather than how and where he is brought up. The hero, despite being brought up by a cunning person is principled and generous while the other guy who is brought up by a self made man ends up being timid. This is being tied and traced back to their actual fathers and subconsciously it reinforces the thought that your character depends on where you belong to. And this 'where' is not defined by the place you grew up but to 'whom' you were born to. While this might be reading too much into what can be classified as a harmless entertainer, it is important that we address the fact that mainstream and popular cinema does have the power to ingrain certain beliefs on impressionable minds! (Available in Netflix and Sun NXT)
