MovieCrow Annual Rankings - Top Music Directors of 2018


The music scene in the Tamil industry remained far from exciting this year. Only a handful of good albums were produced by top music directors and not too many up-and-coming composers left a mark. We've attempted to highlight the best of music from Tamil movies released this year.

 

The Top 5 Music Directors


Govind Vasantha surprised everyone with his work in 96; the entire album sounded fresh as well as served as a pillar of the film. The album ended being highly praised for its unconventional pattern yet appealing nature. Santhosh Narayanan's work spectrum was a little wider and with Vada Chennai, Kaala and Pariyerum Perumal, the composer proved his consistency in delivering solid scores that aid big for storytelling.

 

AR Rahman, who has been a natural choice for biggies, was back this year with Vijay (Sarkar), Mani Ratnam (CCV) and Rajinikanth, Shankar (2.0), and he played to the satisfaction of the commercial gallery. He also left his stamp in songs like Oru Viral Puratchi from Sarkar, Pullingalal from 2.0 and Mazhai Kuruvi from Chekka Chivantha Vaanam that pleased his long-time fans as expected.

 

Anirudh, the man of viral tracks, had Sodakku from Thaana Serntha Kootam and Kalyana Vayasu from Kolamaavu Kokila to add to his list of hits this year. The real good news for the music fans was however Yuvan Shankar Raja's return to his forte and his work this year, be it the youngster favourite Pyaar Prema Kaadhal album or the peppy tracks Kambathu Ponnu from Sandakozhi 2 and Rowdy Baby from Maari 2, they get to feature in his all-time best work.

 

Other Notable Mentions


Music director Kannan came up with quirky and inventive numbers for Tamizh Padam 2. Darbuka Siva and Ajaneesh Lokanath produced a couple of memorable songs for Nimir while Sam C.S, who made his mark with Vikram Vedha was largely disappointing except for a few tracks from Iravukku Aayiram Kangal, Laksmi and Diya.

 

 

Imman, Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi and Ghibran had far and few hit numbers this year. While Kurmuba (Tik Tik Tik) and Unna vitta yarum enaku illa (Seema Raja) worked for the former, Vilambara idaiveli from Imaikaa Nodigal and Nanagiya Nadhi Moolame from Viswaroopam 2, left a mark for the latter two.

 

With GV Prakash and Vijay Antony focusing majorly on their acting careers, their music continues to take a backseat and this year it was reflected in their lackluster albums Semma and Kaali. Notable music director Harris Jayaraj was off the limelight this year.
