Kaala enters week 2: Marching towards 150 Cr at the Box Office!

Irrespective of the low pre-release buzz and political controversies, Rajinikanth's Kaala has managed to make a good impression at the box-office, with trade circles suggesting that the film has collected Rs. 100 Cr+ in only the first 4 days of its release. Kaala has become the 5th film of Rajinikanth's to touch this feat after Sivaji, Endhiran, Lingaa, and Kaabali. However, this collection is still a far cry from Rajinikanth's previous best Kabali which crossed Rs. 300 Cr gross mark in its full worldwide run, eventually becoming the first film from Kollywood  to touch that mark.

Kaala has a rock steady performance in Tamil Nadu and is estimated to have grossed Rs. 44+ Cr (gross) in this region alone.  In Karnataka, where the film saw a delayed and limited release due to problems it faced, the movie managed to collect Rs. 10 Cr+ (gross). And in newly added overseas locations such as Russia and Saudi Arabia,  Kaala has opened to some very good response. Some of the regions have seen some pretty strong collections for the film and have been listed here:

  • Chennai City : 8.2 Cr (7  Days)
  • Malaysia (MYR 4,185,846)- 7.1 Cr (4 Days Opening Weekend)
  • UAE & GCC - 10 Cr (7 Days)
  • USA ($1,717,647) - 11.6 Cr (7 Days)

Kaala under-performed in UK and some European countries and even in Kerala (where Rajini's films have done extremely well in the past), the film has been seen under-performing for reasons such as Ramzan (fasting month), the Nipah Virus scare, Football season and much more. However, Kerala has retained almost 100 screens for week 2, in the hopes of the Ramzan weekend turning fruitful in terms of box-office collections. Karnataka too has retained most of its screens from its previous week for the approaching one.

With no big films to compete this holiday weekend, Kaala is on its way to touch the Rs. 150 Cr mark at the box-office.And since Wunderbar Films and Lyca Productions had a direct release for their movie and sold it for reasonable price in most regions, the film is likely to end up as a profitable venture for all sections of the film trade - producers, distributors and exhibitors.
