Had theatre owners rejected his films, would Vijay have grown so big, asks Abirami Ramanathan

Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association head and producer cum distributor Abirami Ramanathan addressed the consequences theatres would face if producers decided to sell their films to streaming services within days of the film's release. Speaking at the audio launch of a film titled Aaram Thinai, the owner of Abirami Mega Mall was quoted as saying, "Producers sell the rights to online platforms like Amazon, that release the movie within 10-15 days of the movie's theatrical release. Theatre businesses take a major ht because of this."

Mr. Ramanathan also addressed the plight of his preceding speaker (at the event) Ponraj who has stated that "small films are being killed because of the greed of theatre owners". Speaking on the same Ramanathan, who once said that Vijay deserved an Oscar for his performance in Mersal cleared the theatre owners' stance and said, “I have distributed 50 films in the last one year and out of which 45 films were small budget movies. Even though Vijay is a big star now, when he came to the industry, his films were small. Had theatre owners and exhibitors rejected his films saying they were small budget ones, would Vijay have grown so big? So, the problem is not with us."

He concluded, "People are not coming to theatres to watch small budget films with the exception of few like Aruvi. We don’t know why.”
