Maattrraan Songs - Music Review

After Nanban and Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, Harris Jayaraj strikes again in Maattrraan with his signature style songs. There is a song fitting for each occasion and mood. Did Maattrraan meet the sky high expectations? Read on to find it...

 Rettai Kathire

Lyrics - Na Muthukumar, Singers - Krish, Balaji, Mili & Sharmila

Rettai Kathire is the introduction song for the conjoined twins. The song starts with finger snaps and charts the growth of twin Suriya's from the time they are born (baby wailing sound, lyrics saying "varudam urundachu" suggesting the progress). The lyrics aesthetically describe their physical attributes and different characters of the conjoined Suriya's. The pacing of the song is appealing and helps focus on Na. Muthukumar's beautiful lyrics. Krish renders this song excellently by bringing out range of emotions. Other than the gripe about the unintelligible English lyrics in the interludes, this song is sure to make the audience sit up as it rolls on the screen.

 Naani Koni

Lyrics - Viveka, Singers - Vijay Prakash, Karthik & Shreya Ghoshal

Naani Koni is the sure-fire chartbuster of the album. Every aspect of this song has contributed well to weave this breezy romantic number. This song has all qualities to become 2012's Ennamo Edho. The song starts in usual Harris' techno style, guitar and picks up pace soon as singers come onboard.

The song is differently constructed with both pallavi and anupallavi ending with super-catchy line "Koiyum kangal meiyum pesuma". The first charanam stanza by Vijay Prakash is peppy and closing stanza by Karthik is mildly pathos ("mensogam" as the song reveals) while Shreya Ghoshal balances both these singers effortlessly elevates the song to the next orbit. Spectacular vocals. Viveka will be noticed and may take the top honor for his lyrics. Harris' signature is in big bold bright letters throughout the song.

 Yaaro Yaaro

Lyrics - Thamarai, Singers - Karthik

Harris reserves special solo love songs for Karthik. As soon as this combination comes together, fans expect nothing short of "Anjala" or "Vizhi moodi". Harris tries to replicate the success with Karthik singing a break-up pathos song. This song sounds situational and expected to move the story forward. The lyrics by Thamarai is very touching and contains sub-texts which may get revealed within the context of the movie. Yaaro is another pure form melody number going light on instrumentation. This is expected to find its way into people's hearts as dust settles on other catchy numbers.

 Theeye Theeye

Lyrics - Pa. Vijay, Singers - Aalaap Raju & Charulatha

Theeye Theeye is the fast track club song sung by Aalap Raju and Charulatha. This song appears to be a mix of native local tune mixed to club song tune. This song is slightly experimental in the way it is set to tune. Even though Theeye Theeye sails through without any hitch, the lyrics and songs are not as catchy as the other songs after many rounds of first listening. We have to wait and see if this sing catches on with picturization.

 Kaal Mulaitha Poove

Lyrics - Madhan Karky, Singers - Javed Ali & Mahalakshmi Iyer

Kaal Mulaitha Poove (aka Ballerina Baby) is an example of Harris exploring new boundaries with liberal use of russian music instruments delivered in rich commercial style. The use of instruments such as accordion blend uniquely with Javed Ali's voice to bring about a different texture to this stand-out song. In the Charanam, the vocals are interestingly constructed with the male and female voice altering the pace of rendition for the same meter. This different attempt is noteworthy and may capture attention. Madhan Karky's lyrics are again of international quality and cerebral in nature with interesting references to "Soviet Oviya","chamomile poo", "Volga nadhi", etc. In this song, Harris gets out of his comfort zone and delivers a unique song that does not resemble his previous tracks. Will music fans lap up this different attempt?

Bottomline:

Harris and Suriya combination have always spelled success starting from Kaakha Kaakha, Ghajini, Vaaranam Aayiram, Aadhavan and 7aum Arivu. Similarly, KV Anand's association with Harris since Chellamey (as cinematographer), Ayan and Ko, elevated with great picturization, have all been chart busters. Maattrraan will further strengthen this long enviable track record of this successful commercial trio.
