Top 10 Tamil Heroes of 2015

From the two young kids in Kaaka Muttai to the stern old man in Orange Mittai, there were heroes of all kinds and ages this year in Tamil cinema. Check out our ranking of the best Tamil heroes this year.

1. Vikram – I, 10 Enradhukulla

Choosing Vikram as the Best actor was a cakewalk for us. Vikram’s life-threatening makeovers for I were unbelievable. He left people shell-shocked with his dedication as he lost and gained weight at will for the film’s characters. The ‘Koonan’ character from the film was heart-wrenchingly well portrayed by him and so were the intense fight sequences.

2. Kamal Haasan – Papanasam, Uttama Villain, Thoongavanam

Surprisingly, Kamal Haasan had three releases this year and the characters of all the films were strikingly different from each other. While he played a subdued and protective father in Papanasam, he pulled off a complex character in Uttama Villain with great panache. Kamal also had his moments as an undercover cop in Thoongavanam.

3.  Prabhas – Baahubali

Although it was a bilingual and he did not dub in Tamil, Prabhas struck a chord instantly with Tamil audience in SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali. None except Prabhas could have convincingly carried off the scene in which he carries a huge Sivalingam on his shoulders.

4. Ajith – Yennai Arindhaal, Vedalam

If Vedalam had any other actor instead of Ajith in the lead role, the movie could have been a dud. Ajith’s charisma saved the film from falling apart. Not to forget, Ajith also played a refreshing cop in Yennai Arindhaal and his scenes with the little girl were so novel.

5. Jayam Ravi – Thani Oruvan, Bhooloham, Romeo Juliet, Sakalakala Vallavan

What an amazing turnaround year for Jayam Ravi! While Romeo Juliet and Sakalakala Vallavan were run-of-the-mill potboilers, his performance in Thani Oruvan takes the cake. His acting was sharp throughout the film and he also gave Arvind Swamy the edge at many places, which elevated the movie. His performance in Bhooloham is also being widely appreciated.

6. Dhanush – Anegan, Maari, Thanga Magan

Dhanush’s Kaali entry in Anegan received thunderous response among the audience and the mass Danga Maari track became a sensation throughout the world. His flamboyant performance in Maari was enjoyed by a section of the audience and he was as youthful as ever in Thanga Magan.

7. Vijay Sethupathi – Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, Orange Mittai, Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai

Vijay Sethupathi portrayed a refreshing ‘rowdy’ in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which came as a surprise to movie buffs as it was a diametrically opposite role in comparison with his previous roles. His scenes with Parthiban were a scream. He also played the old man’s role to perfection in Orange Mittai.

8. Raghava Lawrence – Kanchana 2

It looks like Raghava Lawrence can never go wrong with a horror film. He struck gold with Kanchana 2 this year, and his performance as an actor received claps throughout the film, which could be compared with current generation superstars like Ajith or Vijay.

9. Suriya – Masss, Pasanga 2

Although Masss did not turn out to be a winner at the box office, Suriya’s performance in the film, especially that of the father’s role did impress the audience. Also, his cameo act in Pasanga 2 has been playing a pivotal role in drawing the crowd to the theatres.

10. Dulquer Salmaan – OK Kanmani

Dulquer Salmaan was a perfect fit for Mani Ratnam’s dream lover boy role in the urban romantic entertainer OK Kanmani. He shared a great chemistry with Nithya Menen in the film and almost managed to create the same spark which Madhavan created in Alaipayuthey 15 years ago.

Notable Mentions

  • We felt that it wouldn’t be fair to compare the little gems, Ramesh and Vignesh of Kaaka Muttai with the mainstream lead actors. Hence, they are here for their charming and natural performances in the film. The way they carried themselves confidently throughout the film is a lesson to even many popular stars.
  • Kathir as a police informer in Kirumi came up with a compelling performance. The way he walks away from the problematic people in the climax with a voice-over was so unconventional, yet believable.
  • Even at 76, legendary comedian Goundamani hasn’t lost his timing sense. He was at his best in driving home a crucial message in 49-O.
