Pa Ranjith is in command over the medium and delivers a solid punch!

Kabilan might be at the centre of the film but it is the characters around him that bring colour and flavour to Sarpatta Parambarai. In a way, Rangan Vathiyar is the hero of the film and Pasupathi is terrific in this role. In a film with brilliant performances from almost everyone, he tops the list.(more)

Pa Ranjith and Arya's sports film is a knock-out

Ranjith elevates the final sequence to an exhilarating battle that represents more than just the game. As Kabilan strides to the ring wearing his blue robe and gloves, you root for his victory with all your heart because unlike most sports films, this isn't only about the individual or the team.(more)

Pa Ranjith's Sports Drama Comes All Guns Blazing

The first hour of Sarpatta Parambarai is a breeze - pulsating, pacy and profoundly engaging. This is the part of the film that is devoted to the conflicted Kabilan's struggle to be accepted as a boxer worth his salt. His progress is slow, the film isn't. It crackles with raw energy as the male prota...(more)

Arya, Pa Ranjith and team have delivered an intense and inspirational sports drama that works well.

Arya's build certainly helps him sell his character Kabilan well. The role reminds us how talented he is as an actor. For instance there is a scene where he repents getting addicted to alcohol. The way he performs in that scene makes you stand up and applaud. Among other performers, Pasupathi, Kalai...(more)

Sarpatta Parambarai is a rousing boxing drama

The film's major success lies in transporting us to the era and ensuring that not a character or a prop feels out of place. The casting and the production design (Ramalingam) deserve all the accolades. And the film's highpoint - a gloriously staged fight (Anbariv are the stunt choreographers) betwee...(more)

Packs a punch, but follows a predictable path

Ranjith's unique path in Tamil cinema, in which he has thrown light on several aspects that other mainstream filmmakers don't, continues with Sarpatta... With dialogues like 'Idhu namba kaalam' (This is our time) and an entire sequence about the need to fight, the director's stamp is unmissable. He'...(more)

Arya, Pa Ranjith and team have delivered an intense and inspirational sports drama that works well.

The small tributes to Muhammad Ali, who spoke against racism in the US spice up the film. Right from the start the film is quite engaging and makes us root for the protagonist because the emotional base is set right. The women in the film also have their own agency for which writer-director Ranjith ...(more)
