Best movies of 2014 - Popular & MCPicks

It has been another important year for Tamil Cinema as record number of movies released during the year. One of the industry associations estimated that more than 202 new releases made it to the big screen this year. Another significant aspect of 2014 is the proliferation of small budget movies. Almost 85% of these movies were made under a budget of Rs 5 Crores. Another notable aspect of this year is Tamil industry moved closer to erasing the line separating commercial cinema and critically acclaimed movies. The encouraging trend is that many of the well acclaimed small budget movies brought back sufficient returns to the makers. As always, some of the highly criticized movies brought good revenue from non-multiplex and single screen audience in B and C centers. Many of the big movies with top heroes struggled to bring in anticipated levels of revenues.

Movies that made the biggest splash in terms of strong word of mouth and box office gross: Veeram, Jilla, MaanKarate Jigarthanda, Velai Illa Pattathari, Kochadaiiyan, Madras, Kaththi and Lingaa.

Other notable movies that did not receive McPick but made good BO revenues : Lingaa, Maan Karate, Aranmanai, Manja Pai, Thirudan Police, Naaigal Jakirathai, Ennamo Nadakudhu, Sigaram Thodu, Arima Nambi

Notable critically appreciated movies that did not receive McPicK : Poovarasam Pee Pee, Sarabham, Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavanigalum, Nedunchalai

Movies with poor media/public reviews & disappointing BO performance : Thirumanam Enum Nikkah, Yaan, Anjaan, Bramman, Irumbu Kuthirai, Rummy, Vanmam

From an art perspective, Tamil Cinema thrived well this year with a wide range of movies getting noticed. However from a business point of view, 2014 was somewhat lukewarm at box office.
