Vellakkara Durai – Random Medley of Comedy Clippings

Bharath Vijayakumar

Replace Sivakarthikeyan or Vimal from Manam Kothi Paravai or Desingu Raja with Vikram Prabhu and you can somewhat guess what Vellakkara Durai is all about. A medley of comedy clips with a plot as an excuse is Vellakkara Durai for you. Truth be told is that there is not much of a plot even as an excuse.

You can guess why Vikram Prabhu has chosen this film. These films cater to a reasonably large section of the audience and he probably wants to access them, something which he might have felt was missing in his short career so far. He acquits himself quite well in this set up with a rather casual body language without straining too much.

This is a film which will either make you laugh your lungs out or watch the proceedings with a straight face wondering what is making the others laugh. As someone who belongs to the latter category, it is tough to pass a judgement on this film. But it does look like a rather lazy attempt what with so many scenes that look exactly the same as those from Ezhil’s last two outings. Soori does put up a good show but there is only so much he can do. You can enjoy the same comedy by viewing it multiple times. But the same comedy in multiple films does tire you. With such talented actors we really hope the directors do more ground work and provide a solid platform for them to perform. It is tough to laugh at jokes such as a channel named ‘Kaakaa TV’.

You can give a shot at madcap humour. John Vijay in fact excels in such roles mixed with villainy. Here too he is impressive. But the least the makers can do is try to have some sort of cohesiveness in the assortment of comedy scenes. Else it is like watching Siripoli or Aadhithya on the big screen minus the remote to change the channel if you are not impressed.

BottomlineThe title of the film has no relevance except a casual reference in a scene. The scenes have no continuity whatsoever. Jumble them up and it won’t make a difference. Yet if it makes people laugh who are we to complain.
