2013's Top 25 Movies of Tamil Cinema

Top 25 Movies of Tamil Cinema in 2013

No rankings in 2013 will look the same since there had been so many different styles of movies. There has been a sharp spike in terms of quantity and quality of movies released in Tamil. To summarize 2013, there were 26 movies that were "MCPick" certified compared to only 16 in 2012. The movies in 2013 were bold, quirky, commercial, thought-provoking and entertaining. The Tamil viewers should be commended for encouraging good movies while punishing half-baked attempts without much hesitation.

Bold Novel Attempts  - Paradesi and Onaiyum Aatukutiyum were bold attempts that could not have been tried by leading directors in any other Indian movie industries outside of Tamil.

Small Movies Flourish - Well-made small movies with lesser known stars backed by good trailer, music and promotions have been noticed last year. Listed are some of the movies that did not disappoint the audience -- Soodhu Kavvum, Vidiyum Munn, Thanga Meengal, Haridas, Neram, Moodar Koodam, Idharkuthaana Aasaipattai Balakumara, Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer, Kalyana Samayal Saadham

Commercial Experiments - Vishwaroopam and Pandiyanadu are few of the commercial experiments set against global and local backdrops.  Vishwaroopam was a radically different idea for Tamil while Pandiayanadu differentiated by its different narration and treatment.

Waning Comedy Wave - Comedy wave that has been largely influencing the Tamil industry is starting to subside. This year saw the rise and fall of "Power Star" in rapid clip. Yet, a few movies such as Theeya Velai Seyyanum Kumaru and Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya stood out from a dozen other comedy movies that failed miserably.

Breezy Love Stories - During the last quarter of 2013, well-made breezy love stories made a comeback as Raja Rani and Endrendrum Punnagai kept the box office ringing.

Commercial Mass Movies - Arrambam and Theeya Velai Seyyanum Kumaru were adapted to meet the needs of the current generation. Biriyani and Singam-2 ensured good opening based on the merit of its lead actors and directors.

Noteworthy Medium Budget Movies : Other movies that made a mark this year were Ethirneechal, Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, Ivan Vera Mathiri and Chennaiyil Oru Naal, all deserving our watch-worthy "MCPick" status.
