Indian music composer AR Rahman announced his divorce from wife Saira Banu after 29 years of marriage recently. The couple who share three grown kids, left their fans heartbroken when Saira Banu through her Mumbai based lawyer Vandana Shah announced on November 20, 2024,
“After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs Saira emphasised that she has taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life,”
This was followed by AR Rahman's midnight tweet with the infamous hashtag, and it read,
“We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for…

AR Rahman and Saira Banu are in the process of getting divorced, and lawyer Vandhana Shah has maintained that the estranged couple released a statement in the media to ensure that the public is informed, and unwarranted speculations are prevented. However being the beloved musician that Rahman is, speculation started arising all over the country.
While up North, the media/audience had taken the topic of alimony to town, down South AR Rahman's bassist Mohini Dey also announcing divorce close to AR Rahman's, caught everyone's wild attention. For context, Mohini Dey is 28 years old, the same age as AR Rahman's eldest daughter Khatija Rahman. While team AR Rahman had announced legal action against any and all type of media slander, wife Saira Banu has issued a statement of her own via a Whatsapp voice note.
"Good afternoon everyone. This is Saira Rahman here. I'm currently in Bombay. I've been physically unwell for the last couple of months. So that's the reason I just wanted to take a break from AR (Rahman). I would request the entire YouTubers, the Tamil media, please please do not say anything bad against him. He is a gem of a person, the best man in the world. It is just because of my health issues that I had to leave Chennai. Because if I'm not in Chennai you people would wonder where Saira is. And I've come here to Bombay, I'm going ahead with my treatment. And this couldn’t have been possible with AR's busy schedule in Chennai. And I didn't want to disturb anybody, neither my children nor him.

But he (AR Rahman) is an amazing human being. And all I would request is please just let him be the way he is. He is not linked with (voice breaks) I trust him with my life. That’s how much I love him, and that’s how much he does. So I kindly request you to stop all false allegations against him. And God bless, and my sincere prayers that we are left alone and given a space at this moment.
We have not announced anything officially yet (referring to the divorce). I'll be coming back to Chennai soon. But I have to complete my treatment and then come. Okay? So request you to kindly stop tarnishing his name, which is absolutely rubbish. And like I said, he is a gem of a person. Thank you."

Vandana Shah, Saira Banu's lawyer addressing both alimony and Mohini Dey rumours has stated in the media, "This other colleague of AR Rahman's who is getting divorced, how did people even think of this rumour. It is such a load of nonsense. In legal terms, I would like to treat it with contempt, people who raise such topics."
Addressing AR Rahman's Rs. 2000 Cr. net worth and speculations that Saira Banu would end up with 50% of it as alimony, Vandana Shah stated, "In India, the idea of receiving 50% alimony after divorce is a myth. And it’s not documented in law. There is no fixed percentage mandated by the legal system. This misconception has been perpetuated, making people believe that a spouse automatically gets 50% alimony upon divorce. But that is not true. The actual outcome largely depends on the arguments presented in court, the Affidavit of Assets and Liabilities submitted, and the overall context of the case.”
