Varisu Songs - Music Review

Ramesh S Kannan

Varisu is an upcoming Tamil language movie with Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles directed by Vamshi Paidipally of Oopiri fame. Vamshi reunites with Thaman after Brindavanam in 2010. Let's check out whether Thaman can deliver the kickass soundtrack for one of the highly expected movies of the year.

Ranjithame: Thaman hits it right out of the park with Ranjithame and the composer cleverly blends the familiar folk tune used countless times in Tamil music with the punchy rhythm. The assorted percussion arrangements highlighted by Sivakumar's Nadhaswaram signature hook peppered throughout the song. Vijay is at ease with his portions, but MM Manasi eventually steals the show, especially with the highly energetic singing towards the end.

Thee Thalapathy: Though Thaman autotuned the STR's vocals a tad too much in Thee Thalapathy, the song stayed a perfect hero uplifting song!.  Thaman keeps the background adequately interesting with the sprightly Godfrey's electric guitar riffs propped by the effectual chorus.

Soul of Varisu: Thaman conceives the adequately melodious tune for KS Chitra and as expected she aces it like a pro but one wishes that composers can expand the genre for the veteran singer instead of pigeonholing her oeuvre. Thaman props up the arrangements with the gradual build-up of Piano by the composer himself and Sandliya's violin.

Jimikki Ponnu: Jimikki Ponnu ticks off every trick required for the instant hit starting with the signature catchy hook, roping in Anirudh for vocals but predictably the song may not stand for a long time in one's playlist. Thaman infuses the brief classical snippet in the middle of the track which is the only respite in an otherwise tad too familiar vibe of the song.

Vaa Thalaiva: Shankar Mahadevan is another singer who has been relegated mostly to the punchy anthemic numbers in Tamil and in Vaa Thalaiva as well the singer is utilized in the same manner. Nevertheless Shankar Mahadevan aces the rendition as usual and it is always a delight to listen to his singing. Vaa Thalaiva's tune also treads along the familiar territory filled with punchy percussions, and motivational lyrics with enough prop-up from the chorus and lead singers.

Bottomline: Thaman delivers a predictable Vijay movie soundtrack filled with catchy songs which are enough to rule the charts for a while.
