Gunjan Saxena Facts & Fiction - According to IAF officer Sreevidya Rajan!

"As this film is a fictional and dramatized version of the life events in Flight Leiutenant Gunjan Saxena set during 1984-1999, no scenes should be construed to represent a true or accurate recreation of the actual events that transpired. It is not a commentary on the characters, circumstances or situation depicted in the film." - reads the disclaimer which pops up less than 1 minute into the opening credits of the Hindi film Gunjan Saxena

And knowing well enough that a biopic on a defense person should not misguide the viewers about India's defense personnel in general, the film-makers go on to add,

Nevertheless, a lot of women air force personnel and the IAF in general has been fuming about Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl starring Jhanvi Kapoor which premiered on Netflix on August 12, 2020. Sreevidya Rajan, who shares Gunjan Saxena's glory of being the 'first female pilot to fly in a combat zone' has now joined the list of people objecting to the biopic. Inadvertently, the Kerala based IAF officer's post has finally gone to reveal the facts and fiction in the film and they stand as thus:

Facts

  • Since the two of us were the first lady pilots to be posted to that helicopter unit, we were skeptical about our acceptance in the male-dominated niche area of flying.
  • We were received with the usual preconceived notions and prejudices from a few colleagues.
  • We were under strict scrutiny and certain mistakes of ours were met with corrective actions which may have been overlooked had it been done by our male counterparts.
  • There were no separate changing facilities or toilets for women.

Fiction

  • There were enough officers to support us [In the movie, only one of the officers is shown to support Gunjan Saxena].
  • Our flying began within a few days of our arrival and was never interrupted or cancelled for petty reasons as wrongly portrayed in the movie.
  • The squadron commander was a thorough professional. He was a very strict and tough officer who took us to task whenever there was a mistake from our side, be it male or female.
  • We never faced any humiliating physical strength demonstrations as shown in the movie.
  • We were never ill-treated or humiliated by our fellow officers.
