The Chennai police took 12 people into custody, including popular Tamil actor Shaam, for alleged gambling activity at the actor's apartment near the upscale Nungambakkam area in the city. The arrests were conducted in the wee hours after another popular actor who allegedly lost a big sum while gambling there tipped off the police. 

Reportedly, game boards, tokens and lakhs of money which was involved in the game were seized by police and they let off let off all 12 arrested with station bail. It is being said that ever since lockdown, Shaam's apartment was functioning as an illegal gambling club between 11 pm and 4 am.

It is worth mentioning here that this crackdown comes only a day after a college student killing himself after losing money in an online game made headlines. It is also worth mentioning here that only recently the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court highlighted the need to regulate online gambling games such as RummyPassion, Nazara, LeoVegas, Spartan Poker, Ace2Three, PokerDangal, Pocket52, My11Circke and Genesis Casino.
