Rajinikanth's announcement of not contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections is talk of the town now and the Superstar's statement on the same has evoked reactions from all corners, including his industry counterpart, political rival and long-time friend Kamal Haasan.
To recap the event, Rajinikanth on Sunday sent out a statement about his decision of not contesting for seats in the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament, in which he said:
"I am not going to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections. Our target is Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. I am not going to support any party in the Lok Sabha elections. So nobody can use my photo or the RMM's symbol in support of or in the campaign of any party,
Tamil Nadu's main problem in the coming elections will be water. It is my humble request that any party that will form a strong and stable government at the Centre and which can solve the water crisis of Tamil Nadu permanently through schemes, be considered for support and voted with at most thought and research."
Taking a major dig, actor Kamal Haasan whose party has decided to contest for 40 seats in the polls has reacted to this statement like thus:
"..You were thumping your thighs & twirling your moustache yesterday, why were you thumping? Just for sound?..Telling that the doctor had advised to be on diet after coming to the dining area, would definitely lead to the question of whether they did not know of the diet before reaching the dining area..Whoever comes to Delhi, it will affect Tamil Nadu.. We are going to Delhi for that."
While the frustration in Kamal Haasan's statement is shared by many in the state, it is worth mentioning here that while announcing his political entry in December, 2017 Rajinikanth had made it quite clear that his target was the state elections and not the Lok Sabha elections. He had then said,
"My entry into politics is certain..I will form my own political party and contest from all 234 seats in the next assembly election. About Lok Sabha polls, I will decide then.. I am not enamored by position or post. At 45, I didn't have that, at 68 will I get that?"
