Dileep's reinstatement creates fury: Mohanlal's effigy burnt, NWMI writes to AMMA!

Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA)'s decision to reinstate actor Dileep, who is an accused and alleged mastermind in actress abduction and sexual assault case has drawn severe criticism from all quarters. Following the decision of the assault survivor and three other actresses' decision to quit from AMMA, pressure has been building on the organisation to reverse what they have done. Earlier today, news of actor Mohanlal's effigy being burnt in front of the Film Chamber of Commerce in Ernakulam spread like wildfire. The activists who burnt the AMMA president's effigy reportedly belonged to the All India Youth federation (AIYF), which is affiliated to the Communist Party of India (CPI). It is worth mentioning here that AMMA is led by two sitting MLAs from the CPI (M).

On the other hand, the Network of Women in MediaIndia (NWMI) have written a letter to AMMA, in which they have emphasized on the security of women and pointed out the past and current mistakes of AMMA, that are of concern to the Women's Collective in Cinema (WCC). Their letter goes, "..It is a grave situation that the film industry in India's most literate State is apparently completely unaware of the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. Further, Mr Mukesh, the Vice-President of AMMA, is also the CPI(M) MLA from Kollam. We demand that as an elected representative who is duty bound to uphold the law, he asks AMMA to withdraw its decision to reinstate the man until his name has been legally cleared."

While the leaders of AMMA have maintained a stoic silence till now, Dileep on his part has writtern a letter himself to AMMA which states that he was saddened by the humiliation the association is being subject to in his name and has claimed that he was trapped in the case in which he had no role. He has further stated, "I do not wish to continue as an active worker of any organisation till my innocence is proved before the film folks and people of the state,"
