Assault survivor quits AMMA after Dileep's reinstatement: Geethu Mohandas, Ramya Nambeesan, Rima Kallingal show solidarity!

A day after it was confirmed that actor Dileep and accused no. 8 in Malayalam actress abduction and sexual assault case has been reinstated to the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), the assault survivor who was part of the organization quit from it. And as a mark of solidarity, three other actresses namely Geethu Mohandas (Nala Damayanthi, En Bommu Kutti Ammavukku), Ramya Nambeesan (Pizza, Sethupathi) and Rima Kallingal (Yuvan Yuvathi) have quit AMMA too, though all the names mentioned remain a part of the WCC (Women in Cinema Collective), which is also a body of the Malayalam film industry.

The assault survivor also released an official statement regarding her decision which read thus,  “I am resigning not just because the accused actor has been taken back into AMMA. In the past when this star had thwarted to keep me away from films by denying opportunities to me, I did approach the organisation, but no action came up. And now when I have gone through very tough times, the organisation appears to be protective of this person and hence I feel there is no point in being a member of this organisation..”

While Geethu Mohandas, Ramya Nambeesan and Rima Kallingal each shared similar sentiments about the reinstatement of Dileep, a common statement from the WCC read as follows:

“The AMMA has, since its formation in 1995, not taken any attempt to bring about a women-friendly workplace in the industry. When the WCC made attempts in this direction, it was met with the muscle power of the fans associations and crass humour. The organisation did not think about the survivor, its own member, when deciding to take back the accused. Hope our resignation will be a reason for AMMA to correct its wrong decisions,”

Dileep's reinstatement comes after actor Mohanlal succeeded Mamootty as the president of AMMA and new members such as Mukesh (Vice President), Edavela Babu (General Secretary) and Jagadeesh (Joint Secretary) assumed their positions on June 24, 2018.
