Multiplex theatres PVR, INOX continue strike against double tax in Tamil Nadu

If one may recall, the Tamil Nadu government had levied a 20% local tax for Tamil films in addition to the 28% GST on ticket prices. Following this, multiplexes like PVR and Inox had gone on an indefinite strike and had requested for the local tax to be eliminated. Now, even with the state government having reduced the local tax from 20% to 15% (as films had also stopped releasing in the fight against it), the state of PVR and INOX remains unchanged.

Speaking about the non-function of these multiplexes which has continued since October 3, 2017, president of the MAI (Multiplex Association of India) Mr. Deepak Asher has been quoted as saying :

“By having double taxation, the principles of GST have been compromised. This is unacceptable from consumer and commercial perspective. If consumers are forced to pay more, footfalls would gradually dwindle. We have requested for a meeting with the State government officials regarding this,”

Even though some multiplexes in Tamil Nadu are showcasing selective content, these theatres incurring huge losses owing to the strikes seems like a sad state of affair. Will the state government intervene or is the MAI's voice falling on deaf ears is something only time can tell.
