Actor Ajith Kumar or Thala as he is affectionately called, recently completed 25 years in the industry and needless to say it has been attention galore for the media shy Ultimate Star (another people given tag). In a career spanning simple boy-next-door characters, romantic hero avatars and action roles, Ajith has seen it all - hits, flops, career breaks, personal injuries; before becoming one of the reigning stars of the Tamil Film Industry. Aasai (1995)


 

Aasai was the first film that gave Ajith his big break in the industry. The role of a typical hot-headed youngster who is hopelessly in love with a girl was portrayed with ease by the then upcoming actor. The film remains tops the list because of the innocence and freshness one gets to witness in their favourite Ajith Kumar. 


Vaali (1999)


 

To say that Valli re-defined Ajith's career would be an understatement. The actor who had so far cemented himself as a romantic hero, pulled off a stunning performance playing a psychotic deaf and mute twin sibling, who is in love with his sister-in-law. The role won him a Filmfare award for best actor in Tamil. To portray two contrasting yet subtle roles and pull it off elan is not something many actors could have done. 

 

Mankatha (2011)


Ajith took the unconventional route with Manakatha protaying a lead role who also happens to be the bad guy in the film. With Mankaatha, he also brought in the whole salt-and-pepper style into fashion, leading to a series of inspirational follow-ups among fans and fellow celebrities; with the hair-do now becoming his signature style. 

Kaadhal Mannan (1998) 

Ajith as an edgy Generation X youngster in Kaadhal Mannan had a phenomenal welcome among the youth. The film also became widely popular for its music, the MSV - Vivek comic elements and the timeless screenplay; making it watchable even after all these years. 

 

 

Amarkalam (1999)


 

Amarkalam was the first full-fledged action film for Ajith, in which he played a ruthless rogue with the background of a disturbed childhood. He was paired for the first time with his now-wife Shalini; one of the many reasons the film is watched. 

 

Kaadhal Kottai (1996)


 

Kaadhal Kottai was the first movie of Ajith's to be remade in Hindi. It established him as the ultimate romantic hero and went on to become one of the cult classics in the romance genre. 

 

Kandukonden Kandukonden (2000)


 


Kandukonden Kandukonden saw Ajith portray the insecurities, outlook towards life and the love angle of an aspiring movie director with apt emotions. Despite the film being a multi-starrer, Ajith's performance stood out making the film one of his career best.

 

Varalaaru (2006)


 

Varalaaru was Ajith's first and only film in a triple role. His dramatic weight loss for portraying the role of a effeminate bharathanatiyam dancer in the film, deservingly won him a Filmfare best actor award for the third time. 

 

Billa (2007)


 

Ajith who was so far seen in causal and commercial roles, adapted an uber stylish avatar in Billa. The film was also among the earliest lot of remakes that went on to become successful trendsetters.


Dheena (2001)


 

In the beginning of this article, we mentioned about Ajith being affectionately referred to as Thala. It was the film Dheena that coined this term and also paved the first stepping stone for South's most sought director of today, AR Murugadoss.
