First Quarter 2017 Tamil Movies Report
Production houses have been in a hurry this year, as 3 to 6 Tamil films had hit the screens every other week in the first quarter of 2017. Among the flurry of releases, only a handful of them received critical reception as well as made merry at the box office.

Thrillers ruled the box office
Adhey Kangal, Maanagaram and Kuttram 23 impressed the audience and critics alike with their thrilling screenplays. They also had a good run at the box office in spite of biggies releasing around them.
KV Anand back to his best
Director KV Anand came up with the runaway hit, Kavan, which directly attacks the TRP-hungry media. Interestingly, it's the first biggie of the year with unanimous positive reviews and word of mouth. Vijay Sethupathy's earnest performance as a journalist has been the talk of the town right now.
Biggies disappoint the trade
Vijay's Bairavaa, Suriya's Si3 and Jayam Ravi-Arvind Swamy's Bogan failed to ignite the box office, in spite of the latter 2 receiving good reviews from the critics. This proves yet again that reviews don't decide the box office verdict.
Notable attempts
Kaadhal Kan Kattuthe received thumbs up from the critics, while Vijay Antony's Yaman was a fairly engaging political drama. Vijay Milton's Kadugu was lauded for its socially relevant content. Although Dora received mixed reviews, Nayanthara's stellar performance has earned her accolades.
Most trolled movies
Gautham Karthik's Muthuramalingam, GV Prakash's Bruce Lee and Raghava Lawrence's Motta Shiva Ketta Shiva were the most trolled movies by meme creators in the last quarter. Their outdated content and over-the-top performances earned them this unique feat.
