8 years back, Gautham Menon's Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya rose to fame when it became the first ever Indian film to be shot in the country of Malta. (It also happens to be the only India film to be shot in the country till date). Starring Silambarasan and Trisha, the movie was highly popular for the number OmanaPenne (composed by oscar winner AR Rahman) which was shot with the famous Azure Window of Malta as the background. Sadly, the historic landmark has recently been subject to the outrage of nature and this is what is left of it.

This famous landmark had also featured in the 2011 series premiere of Game of Thrones, when Kahl Drogo got wed to Daenerys. (For the unknown, these are the names of characters that appear in the series.

Mourning the collapse of such an iconic place, the country's tourism association toom to their social media page to express the same. They wrote :

“The flagship of the Gozitan touristic sites has sunk in its same birthplace from where for thousands of years, it stood high and proud heralding one of the natural beauties our little island is endowed with.”

Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat added this to the heart-breaking news :

“Reports commissioned over the years indicated that this landmark would be hard hit by unavoidable natural corrosion. That sad day arrived”

The Azure Window is also known as the Dwejra Window and was 28 meter (92 ft)tall. The natural limestone arch was located on the island of Gozo in Malta. The collapse of the same is said to have occurred due to years of erosion caused by under and overground sea swells.

Tragedy or not, Gautham Menon's film will continue to be the only solace, for reminiscing this beautiful work of nature :
