Karthik Subbaraj's 'Silent' Experiment is a let down of sorts!

Karthik Subbaraj's attempt to make a silent movie had potential but it isn't written and executed in the best possible fashion. If you go in to watch Mercury expecting another Pushpak, then be warned that you would end up disappointed.(more)

Karthik Subbaraj's silent horror-thriller is intriguing but ultimately doesn't add up

It's no spoiler to mention that Prabhu Deva plays a crucial role in the proceedings. His character is afflicted by mercury poisoning, but beyond that his motivations and his horrifying malevolence are superficially explained, just as Subbaraj does not deliver any sound comment on corporate negligence. One of the major problems with Mercury is that the story just does not stitch together.(more)

Prabhudheva's silent horror film is technically sound but has a flimsy plot

You should definitely check out the movie for its excellence in the technical department. It becomes your average run-of-the-mill Bollywood horror film, pretty quickly though. With a flimsy plot, Mercury falters at many points.(more)

Pretentious social drama

Mercury is a below average thriller which can be watched if you have nothing great to do over this weekend. Don't expect an extraordinary plot or performances! You may be more intelligent than this highly preachy social drama.(more)

As far as thrillers go, there are no big scares that 'Mercury' delivers.

Prabhudheva as the entity is scary at first. But there are times when his piercing cries get a little too much and are rendered ineffective. The way how the filmmaker has tried to tie-up corporate disasters to the film's story is commendable, but he also tries a lot to simplify the story which gets in the way of the scary parts considering the film only runs for 108 minutes. However, as thrillers go, this is one of the better ones that we have seen this year. (more)

The Silence Speaks A Thousand Words But They Are Audible Only To A Few!

In a nutshell, Karthik Subbaraj's brave attempt needs to applauded when it comes to some experimentation in Indian cinema. Unfortunately his film based on the idea of mercury poisoning, corporate corruption and negligence wobbles to stay on its feet firmly due to a cluttered narrative and a few loopholes which leave some unquestions unanswers. Go for this one only if you are in the mood for something 'hatke'. For the rest, this silence isn't gold.(more)

A daring attempt; watch it with patience and an open mind, Mercury might thrill you

Mercury is definitely fictional. One leaving the theatre satisfied or otherwise depends on how well they are able to connect to the movie. The scenes might seem unconvincing but if you could not ponder about it and move on, Mercury might satisfy you. Watch it with patience and an open mind, perhaps it might send you home with a smile.(more)

Deva's Thriller Is Not A Worthy Silent Film

The counting game is no fun because Mercury is filmmaking by the numbers awkwardly cloaked in a larger message that alludes to many a major industrial disaster of this century.(more)

This Prabhudheva starrer is a misguided mess

And the noise is relentless: cymbals clash, cars crash, empty drums fall, music blares. Wordless is more like it. The film, taking off from the idea that corporate greed is far more dangerous than poison, takes the easy way by making its charactersfour young men and a woman hearing-and-speech impaired. And away they go the movie route of doing a dumb showexaggerated sounds and hand gestures, their version of sign language. These five young things waste a whole bunch of their time, and ours, as they drink and dance and romance in a cottage in a deserted spot. Finally, the plot kicks in, but only after weve spent too much time admiring the camera work and the psychedelic colours of the forest in the night: after a car chase, and a dead body, this lot is to be found in an abandoned factory (which was once the site of a gas leak, leading to death and disability) fleeing from a vengeful zombie, played by Prabhudheva, vamping it up for all hes worth. Mercury pays tribute to Pushpak right in the beginning, but Kamal Haasan's classic thriller was silent in the way real silent films were. Karthik Subbaraj has had fun with the undead in Pizza, and the unlovely in Jigarthanda, but this one is a much-too stretched out misguided mess, masquerading as a parable. If you want to see what real silence can mean, go watch the marvelous A Quiet Place, still running in theatres.(more)
