Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil: Jiiva's Distasteful Dig Amid Karur Tragedy & TVK Derecognition

PUBLISHED DATE : 17/Oct/2025

Actor Jiiva's upcoming Tamil movie Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil (TTT) had a teaser release on Friday, and in the video, there is a dialogue that takes a distasteful dig at DMK party member Anbil Mahesh's sorrow that was famously captured on camera over the Karur tragedy caused by actor Vijay's TVK party rally on September 27, 2025.

"They were told repeatedly to follow the conditions", stated Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi while breaking down after seeing bodies of children who died in the Karur stampede. The video was mocked by supporters of actor Vijay alleging "fake tears", and now actor Jiiva who has co-starred with Vijay in the Shankar directed Nanban (2012), makes a mockery of this sensitive topic with the TTT dialogue, "I told you all repeatedly to follow the conditions, did you all listen?".

While satire and political commentary are intrinsic to Tamil cinema’s fabric, invoking a real-life human tragedy, particularly one still under judicial review, is crossing into poor taste. Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is produced By Kannan Ravi, and co-produced by Deepak Ravi under KR Group Banner. TTT credits Sanjo Joseph, Nithish Sahadev and Anuraj OB as writers, and Nithish Sahadev as the film's director.

Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) meanwhile is facing a de-recognition row since the Karur tragedy. The Election Commission of India on October 17, 2025 (Friday) informed the Madras High Court that TVK led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, is not a recognised political party. This was at a hearing of the Public Interest Litigation filed by C Selvakumar, who sought, among other reliefs, the derecognition of TVK following the 27 September stampede at a Karur rally organized by the party that claimed 41 lives.
