Superstar Rajinikanth and Malayalam star Mohanlal shared screen space for the first time in the Tamil blockbuster Jailer (2023) which was written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, and produced by Sun Pictures. Jailer 2, a sequel to this movie has currently begun production, and Mohanlal spoke of the same while promoting his March 27 release L2: Empuraan in Tamil Nadu. 

In an interview with a Tamil channel, Mohanlal said, "Jailer 2 has now started. If they call me (for doing the movie), I'll go".  Mohanlal was one of the veteran actors to do a star cameo in Jailer. Lalettan played a character named Mathew, who is a Mumbai based smuggler. 

In Jailer, Mohanlal helps Rajinikanth's character Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer in securing a temple crown jewel via a strategic heist. Jailer 2 sees the return of Rajini as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, and Mohanal's latest statement has given hope to fans of the franchise that Mathew will return as well.
