Kaala starring Rajinikanth listed in 25 Films of the Century by BFI's Sight and Sound

The Sight and Sound magazine is a 94 year old publication of the UK Government funded British Film Institute (BFI), and the cover story of the Summer 2024 issue of Sight and Sound lists 25 special films of the 21st century, each taken from the year of 2000 to 2024. A global collection of movies, the list Sight and Sound states has been made with 'no aspirations to comprehensiveness', and that it is 'a subjective, esoteric, perhaps even provocative collection of films'. 

 

India has one entry in Sight and Sound's 25 Films of the Century, and it is the Pa. Ranjith directed Tamil movie on Dalit politics, Kaala (2018). Starring 'Superstar' Rajinikanth in the lead, Kaala is a production venture of the actor's former son-in-law Dhanush. The movie has Santhosh Narayanan for music, and features a wide range of performers like Nana Patekar, Eswari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Samuthirakani, Anjali Patil, Manikandan, Sayaji Shinde, Pankaj Tripathi among others. 

Internationally acclaimed movies like Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence (2001), Korean adaption of the Japanese Manga Old Boy (2003), Palestinian director Elia Suleiman's Arabic movie Divine Intervention (2002), Oscar nominated A History of Violence (2005), cult-comedy Bridesmaids (2011) co-written and lead by Kristen Wiig, are some of the other films on this BFI list.
