Media response to Kolaveri (Part 2 of 2)

What Big Media says about Kolaveri? (Part 2 of 2)

At the time of publishing this article, Kolaveri is marching towards 2 Million views. This rage song is not showing any signs of fatigue as of yet. Many national dailies allocated the front page section for providing coverage on Kolaveri. NDTV had an 8 minute segment on national network that covered interview with Dhanush and Aishwarya Dhanush at prime time slot. Let us see what the leading journals have to say about this trendsetter song,

  • In an interview with The Hindu, Music Director Anirudh recalled "Director said the situation demanded a light-hearted fun song about love failure. I came up with a tune in ten minutes. I don't know what kind of mood Dhanush was in… he started singing in broken English and came up with this in 20 minutes. It just happened,”
  • Indian Express screamed "Killer Kolaveri". Anirudh revealed an interesting fact that "even now we do not have a lyrics sheet for the song, it was sung on the spot and we forgot to write it down! We knew that down South the song would be a hit but we never imagined it would scale so high.” The article revealed that Dhanush sang the song with just two breaks. “We had to take those breaks because we were laughing uncontrollably,” said Dhanush.
  • Emirates Daily was drawing the connection to Super Star as they made reference to Dhanush as Rajnikanth's son-in law -- "Rajnikanth's son-in law's song goes viral, Catchy tune has India humming and clicking away"
  • IBN Live in an attempt to dissect the reason for it's success said "it's a song fit for bathroom singers. It's simple beats make it more catchy. Dhanush's description of heartbreak through Kolaveri Di is extremely funny. Heartbreak is a phenomenon almost everyone can relate to, this has further fueled the popularity of Kolaveri Di."
  • India Today revealed some future plans for this song. The daily claimed that their sources close to the project say that they plan to tweak the song and that the audio will hit the shelves soon.
  • Wall Street Journal, India also commented "Luckily for Dhanush, the song is so catchy most people are willing to overlook the fact its lyrics make a mockery of their intelligence"
  • Deccan Chronicle and Hindustan Times talked about how this south song is not only blaring all across the country but also the globe for its catchy tune, traditional Tamil percussion and amusing lyrical style.

Only article that decided to condemn the song is another piece published today by The Hindu. It appeared to have tried to balance the hype by sharply remarking that the "song is infected by misogynist undertone. It is sung by a love sick youth in an inebriated condition, the lyric is apparently absurd, but the pathos is clear. But there is no doubt ‘Why this Kolaveri', like many other Tamil songs before it, is unmistakably juvenile and clearly male chauvinistic. The lyric blames the woman for all ills. Songs like this are fractal versions of the movies they are part of – one long narrative of ‘eve teasing'."

On a lighter note, one of our readers pointed out that "Kolaveri" is a an anagram of "e-viral ok!"... So, it is all part of the destiny.
