Director Halitha Shameem who has critically acclaimed films like Poovarasam Peepee (2014), Sillu Karupatti (2019) and Aelay (2021) to her credit began shooting for Minmini, a Tamil movie in 2016. In a novel attempt for Tamil cinema, Halitha Shameem decided to wait for 6 years for her actors to grow to continue filming. This method of filming was popularized by the Hollywood movie Boyhood (2014) where writer, director Richard Linklater spaced out his film's schedules between 2002 and 2013, so that he could capture his actors' genuine aging and growth. 

While Linklater also developed his script after each schedule, it remains unknown if Halitha has done the same or has a pre-finalized script. The director has however confirmed that the second schedule of Minmini will begin filming from next month i.e. June, 2022.

Just like Boyhood, Minmini is also centered around the emotions of young people from their childhood to adolescence. Former child actors Gaurav Kalai, Pravin Kishore, and Esther Anil (of Papanasam fame) play lead in Minmini, while cinematographers Manoj Paramahamsa and Abinandhan Ramanujam are producers of the movie.
