Bharat, Oh Baby: Indian Film Industry bets on South Korean remakes!

In recent years we have had instances when Indian films have taken 'inspiration' from their South Korean counterparts or officially remade (e.g. 2016 Tamil film Kaadhalum Kadandhu Pogum which is a remake of My Dear Desperado), a trend that has emerged so fast that a simple internet search leads one to a page listed with such movies.

At the moment two highly buzzed movies in the Indian film industry - Bharat (Hindi) starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Oh Baby (Telugu) starring Samantha are all set to follow suit, for both of them are remakes of Korean hit films An Ode to My Father (2014) and Miss Granny (2014) respectively.

While An Ode to my Father is a melodrama whose story spans six decades and revolves around man trying to reunite with his family post war, Miss Granny is a light-hearted story of a septuagenarian who magically finds herself in the body of her 20-year-old self.

Experts who have observed the affiliation of Indian film industry towards the east opine that Korean remakes make for a safe bet because 'they resonate with Indians in a big way' due to the 'cultural and emotional similarities'.

So it doesn't come as a surprise when a star actor like Salman Khan for whom Eid releases are critical (Bharat hits theater screens on June 5, 2019), bets on an import from the east to match the expectations of his fans.

The affinity for such remakes doesn't seem to be going away either, for South Korean hits such as Miracle in Cell No. 7Tunnel and A Hard Day are all scheduled to be remade in Indian languages.
