3 Takeaways from 2nd Week BO for Maattrraan

Yesterday, we had published a gloom and doom 1st week report for Maattrraan. We had mentioned 2nd week is a different story altogether. Let's look at 3 takeways from Maattrran 2nd week BO collections.

Maattrraan shows highest 2nd Week BO Collections among recent movies

Maattrraan showed marginal drop in number of shows for 2nd week. Also, the collections in key multiplexes also showed healthy drop. We don't have BO collection numbers for AGS where Maattrraan had maximum number of shows and collections (because AGS is the producer). Maattrraan was aided by long festival week. Also, pulled down by heavy rains which affected collection in major cities in TN. A few single screen theatre managers compared the 2nd week collection pattern similar to that of Nanban.

Pizza headquarters was Mayajaal where the collections were higher than Maattrraan. In cities, Pizza had limited number of shows since it didn't find favour with family audience. Overall, Pizza's collection for such a small budget film is extremely impressive in most of the multiplex screens.

TV Promotions for movies are still important

Maattrraan team started promotions only during 2nd week with making videos, song video releases and interviews. The collections reflect the direct impact of effective TV promotions. Somehow, Maattrraan team was able to get coverage in Sun, Vijay and Jaya even though the satellite rights were sold to Jaya TV. When the content is good enough, TV promotions can be effective in pushing up one BO status.

Suriya owns the Box Office for 2nd Week

Just like how Vijay and Ajith are Box Office opening weekend kings, Suriya has somehow managed to own the 2nd and 3rd week audience (loyal neutral fans and family audience) who have not let him down so far. For the third time, Suriya has proved the value of neutral fans who are often ignored by rest of the leading heroes. Maattrraan BO data proves the same point again after Vaaranam Ayiram and 7aum Arivu, which received scathing initial reviews

Final Note: Power of "Covers"

Media salivates over 2 types of stories - 1. Rags to Riches story 2. Good comeback story. This week BO report has both these elements in the form of Pizza (#1) and Maattrraan(#2). It is surprising to note why BO analysts and media members are not covering such compelling Box Office stories. Instead of asking why MovieCrow is covering this Box Office report, fans should probably ask why media is NOT interested in covering this story -- "covers" ?
