Bajirao Mastani Movie Review - Sets, Ranveer shine, not the story!
Divay Agarwal
Bajirao Mastani is a visual extravaganza from the word go but unfortunately lacks an exciting story and hence does not meet the expectations we had after watching its fantastic trailer.
Bajirao BallalPeshwa (Ranveer Singh) an undefeated Maratha warrior, whodreams for creating the Bharatvarsha, (one Hindu nation)meets Mastani, (DeepikaPadukone)the muslim princess of Bundelkhand and falls in love with her and gets married. Back home, his first wife Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra) and the Hindu community raises strong opposition. What will happen next is the rest of the story.
From the beautiful sets to the scintillating costumes combining with the amazing cinematography, everything about this film mesmerizes you. Kudos to the art director(Bhansali, SujitSriram and Saloni), the costume stylist (by AnjuModi) and the cinematographer (Sudeep Chatterjee). The songs are wonderful especially 'PingaPinga' and 'Mastani' and the background score too is engaging. The writing though could’ve been much better and the movie could easily be half an hour shorter.
Apart from the stunning visuals, it is Ranveer Singh that brings life into the film with his almost perfect portrayal of Bajirao BallalPeshwa! With an amazing body language and the Marathi dailect he picked up, he owns the character. Priyanka Chopra as his first wife Kashibai is amazing to watch and her detailing of the character is worth appreciating. Deepika Padukone looks scintillating as Mastani and does well on the war front but not otherwise. Her character is not so layered and the dialogues given to her are very over dramatic. Tanvi Azmi is brilliant in her part as the widowed mother of Bajirao.
In all, Bajirao Mastani deserves a one-time watch for the visual treat it offers and for the career best performance of Ranveer Singh!
