Mundasupatti Review - Worth a visit

Mundasupatti – Worth a visit
Bharath Vijayakumar

Mundasupatti is the latest to join the bandwagon of mainstream films that metamorphosed from short films. Backed by C.V. Kumar our expectation to experience a film that traverses a slightly different path from the routine is a given. Is the trip to Mundasupatti worth our time?

Plot:

A photographer (Vishnu) visits a village (Mundasupatti ) that is steeped in superstitious beliefs. The inhabitants shudder at the mere sight of a camera as they believe it brings bad omen to them, based on a past experience which they fail to attribute to mere coincidence. Under normal circumstances the photographer would have fled from the scene in a hurry. But not now has he has fallen for a girl from Mundasupatti.

Cast:

Vishnu 's meticulousness in selecting offbeat roles is all too evident. In this period film set in the early 80s he puts up a decent show again. He is one actor who is not too keen to steal the show and prefers to keep things simple. Nandita looks the part as a naive village belle. Ramdoss who plays Munishkanth comes up with a performance that is a double edged sword. He has gone all out with his antics. While most of them are enjoyable, the effort to milk out maximum laughter through him results in slight exasperation at a few places. The guy playing the ‘Saamiyar’ with his lecherous eyes is also good.

Crew:

The technical team needs to be commended for bringing in the 80s feel quite neatly. The detailing is quietly evident without screaming from the rooftop.  Sean Roldan makes his presence felt with an impressive score.

Direction:

The film is a neat comedy and full marks to the debutant maker Ram for that. It starts off promisingly. But one feels it takes time to get into the main plot. While the scenes themselves are not redundant, for a film that is essentially a comedy it does take time to warm up. For a while again in the second half there is not much happening. Now it is even  more evident as the laughs have dried up. But the climax makes up for it and is a laughathon while it lasts. The film could have definitely been crisper. The lead actors do their part well. But that extra something that would draw us to their characters is missing. A little underplay from Ramdoss in a few scenes and a more buoyant performance from the others elsewhere would have probably been the icing on the cake. All said, this is a commendable movie from a debutant filmmaker.

Bottomline:

Mundasupatti would have definitely been a ‘must visit trip’ if not for it’s length and pointless wandering now and then. Nevertheless it is definitely ‘worth a visit’ that will leave you with a smile.
