Thalaivar 173: RKFI Video Fuels Speculation Around Ashwath Marimuthu

PUBLISHED DATE | 03/Jun/2026

The long-running mystery surrounding the director of Rajinikanth's Thalaivar 173 appears to be nearing a resolution. Fresh speculation suggests that Dragon and Oh My Kadavule filmmaker Ashwath Marimuthu could be the one helming the much-awaited project, which is set to be produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International.

The buzz gained momentum after RKFI shared a stylish birthday tribute video for Ashwath Marimuthu on social media. While the production house stopped short of making an official announcement, the gesture has led many to believe that the filmmaker is indeed attached to the Rajinikanth-starrer, which is being eyed for a Pongal 2027 release.

Thalaivar 173 has witnessed multiple developments over the past year. Sundar C was initially announced as the director before stepping away from the project, citing overwhelming pressure. Don director Cibi Chakravarthi was later linked to the film, and a first-look announcement followed. However, the lack of updates in recent months sparked rumours that he too had exited the venture.

Interestingly, Ashwath Marimuthu had earlier revealed that he narrated a script to Rajinikanth, who was highly impressed by the story and its antagonist. The filmmaker recalled that discussions had even progressed to potential casting choices before the project failed to materialise at the time.

While fans await an official confirmation on Thalaivar 173, it remains unclear whether Ashwath will complete work on Silambarasan's STR 51 before moving on to the Rajinikanth project. The fantasy rom-com, announced last year, is expected to go on floors after the release of Arasan.
