Youth Review - DON on steroids With Amazing Ken, positioned in a school backdrop!

Premise: Ken is a carefree school student who falls for every girl he sees. How his romantic relationships and aimless attitude affect his studies, what happens after things become serious at home when his parents get involved forms the remaining story.

Writing/ Direction: There are many ways for the youth these days to get distracted—smoking, drinking, or other influences. Ken, as a writer, chooses to explore a more carefree side of a youngster’s life while gently steering towards what should ideally be one’s focus. Instead of leaning into heavier themes, he opts for a lighter approach, portraying a boy who spends time aimlessly with friends and gets easily carried away by attractions, making it relatable for a wider audience.

While the intent is clearly to keep things commercial and engaging, the execution occasionally feels a bit stretched, especially since the situations revolve around a school-going character. That said, the film does manage to offer some enjoyable moments. Suraj Venjaramoodu’s scenes stand out, and a few classroom portions bring in simple, easy humour that works in parts.

At times, the presentation leans more towards a cinematic tone rather than staying grounded, which may affect how naturally some moments land. The narrative follows a familiar arc—reminiscent of films like Don—where a carefree protagonist gradually discovers purpose through an emotional turning point. While this structure is engaging, a slightly more rooted screenplay could have enhanced its impact.

The film’s message, especially around the unconditional love of parents, comes through well and adds emotional value. Though the storytelling occasionally meanders, there remains a sense of curiosity about how it all concludes. Some character developments and emotional beats might have benefitted from a more organic build, but the overall intent and message still come across clearly.

Performances:   Ken proves that he is an all-rounder, the champ is able to pull-off style, charm, dance and emotional expressions at the same time. His fluid body language helps. Out of the three girls, Meenakshi Dinesh is a good find and she has played her part naturally. Priyanshi Yadav looks so fake on-screen, maybe it is a metaphor indicating her characterization. Sirai fame Anishma Anil’s performance is fine, but excessive makeup watered down her part. Sooraj Venjaramoodu’s performance is a standout, his versatility is again showcased, the man has put up a solid show in both the funny scenes and as well as the emotional ones. Devadarshini gets good screen time, she has delivered exactly what is required, but her role was conveniently written. No big scope for Nalini, here to utter some forceful touching dialogue at the end, just like SJ Suryah from DON. The friends offer a few laughs here and there, but downside too loud. Also the two girls who came as the heroine's friends were extremely annoying.

Technicalities: GV Prakash’s music is the lifeline of the movie, though quite typical, it doesn’t change the fact that how pleasant the songs sounded. The background score is neat as well, frolic during the school portions and focused in the heavy moments. Good that DOP Viki has stayed balanced by not treating the film with too many colours, his lighting for the night sequences are evidently good. Nash’s editing is too clumsy, with more planning in the narrative and wiser cuts are required to avoid the random scene orders.

Verdict: Ken delivers a strong performance, and the film’s flavour is likely to connect well with the Gen Z crowd in a theatrical setting, thanks to its share of pleasing moments. While the writing shows potential, a tighter approach could have elevated the experience further, particularly in helping the emotional finale land with greater impact.
