Madharaasi Review - An Engaging Actioner with Enough Masala!

Madharaasi is an action entertainer starring Sivakarthikeyan, Rukmini Vasanth and Vidyut Jamwal in the lead roles. The film is directed by AR Murugadoss and the music is scored by Anirudh Ravichandar.

Premise:  Vidyut Jamwal enters Tamil Nadu to terrorize the state by spreading gun culture. NIA officer Biju Menon is in charge to control the situation, how Sivakarthikeyan who suffers from delusion disorder steps in and saves the day forms the crux of the story.

Writing/ Direction: The threat is clearly established in the very first scene, a warning alarm about gun culture is appreciable as it can be chaotic if it comes to reality, the crucial school scene easily sums the potential danger. Sivakarthikeyan’s characterization is unique, the crisp backstory adds so much strength to the film. Efficiently using it as a tool in the romance portion and making it empathetic is one of the well written traits of the screenplay by AR Murugadoss. There is a clap-worthy earthquake sequence in particular, that serves the audience’s emotional desire. The love track is admirable, has a meaningful reasoning that values both the viewers and characters’ sensibilities, the beautifully presented montages elevate their chemistry. The interval block is powerful as the staging to the sequence is an enjoyable crowd-pleaser. The second half starts on a dry note, picks up pace with plenty of masala elements required for a commercial flick, sadly the climax lacks drama and limits itself as a face-off physical outburst. Otherwise the action episodes have a convincing purpose, enough buildups and importantly some theatrical punches as well. No smartness with respect to the villains, hence the story gets stuck at the same place after a point. Factors like Sivakarthikeyan’s helping nature in the form of dialogues and constantly leaking information through moles become highly repetitive. Logics do go for a toss and demand fine tuning to make things more relevant.

Performances: Sivakarthikeyan scores big time in a peculiarly designed role followed by Maaveeran, brings out the dynamic qualities of the actor and man has shown remarkable fitness in the action stretches. Rukmini Vasanth’s character writing is pretty good, she has a major part in driving the screenplay at many places. Vidyut Jamwal and Sarpatta fame Shabeer are beasts, they have relished in the action zone, but their character developments fall short, especially their underwhelming friendship angle. Biju Menon perfectly fits in the shoes of the commander in chief officer of NIA, his role does make a mark. Quite a dummy role for Vikranth, at least someone less familiar could have been casted.

Technicalities:  A satisfying slow poison kind of an album from Anirudh, a huge sigh of relief from him leaving the usual hero elevation tracks behind. He contributes with soulful songs and his screenplay-oriented theme tracks are impactful that are nicely blent with the flow. Barring a few jittery slow-motion shots, the camera work upbeats the mood as the shots are of top quality, the lighting for the night sequences are apt too. Racy cuts help many tightly packed stretches, but there are places where the lag is bothersome, the two full-fledged finale fights in quick succession for example. Action choreography is powerful, stunts carry that cinematic appeal yet performed with finesse.

Verdict:  Sloppy at parts and the villain characters using their physical abilities alone is questionable. However, we have a winner in hand with a cautious threat, the strong want for the hero and the enjoyable commercial elements uplifting the flow.
