An Engaging Actioner with Enough Masala!

Sloppy at parts and the villain characters using their physical abilities alone is questionable. However, we have a winner in hand with a cautious threat, the strong want for the hero and the enjoyable commercial elements uplifting the flow.(more)

Sivakarthikeyan, Murugadoss deliver a smartly packaged commercial entertainer

A graceful Rukmini Vasanth as the love interest, a swaggering Vidyut Jamwal as the antagonist, and a reliably grounded Biju Menon provide ample support. Of course, the film uses the crutch commercial cinema's creative licence - a hero who can take innumerable punches and not even a stray bullet, a villain who can make trained soldiers look like amateurs - a little too often, but there's conviction in the filmmaking, with the technical team doing solid work, that keeps us from complaining.(more)

Works only in bits and pieces

Madharaasi is an action-packed entertainer that clicks only in parts. The hero's characterization, Sivakarthikeyan's captivating performance, some fun moments, and the well-devised action blocks stand out as the film's assets. However, the dragged second half with repetitive sequences, and a predictable screenplay without thrilling moments make this film just an okay watch.(more)

Logic dies, but Sivakarthikeyan lives to tell gun culture tale

Sivakarthikeyan, as Raghuram, sells the innocent act convincingly. Be it the emotional sequences or the action blocks, he carries the film. Rukmini Vasanth as Malathi looks the part and performed to the best of her abilities. Biju Menon plays an NIA officer. But, his character reminds us of every Tamil cinema police, who appears only after the hero tackles the villain. Vidyut Jammwal gets many stylish scenes and his sequences with Sivakarthikeyan's Raghu help the film from drowning.(more)

Madhrasi Fails to Pack a Punch Due to Dreary Narration

Sivakarthikeyan, known for comedy-centric hits like Don and Doctor, gives his all to fit into a muscular action avatar, but the uneven writing limits his impact. Anirudh Ravichander, expected to elevate the film with catchy tunes and a pulsating background score, surprisingly falls short.(more)

This Sivakarthikeyan starrer is too formulaic and old fashioned for its own good

Madharaasi does not make ample use of Rukmini Vasanth as she is forced to play a one-note love interest who ends up being a pawn in between the villains game. She looks radiant on screen and its a shame the writing does not do her any service this time around. The love angle does not blossom in interesting directions and you dont feel attached to either of them in any meaningful way. Biju Menon too makes a big impact as the particularly sullen officer leading the covert operation. Vidyut Jamwal is menacing and brings his A game to a script that does not meet him at his level. He is performing in a different movie and having lots of fun chewing the scenery, and I wish I was watching that movie all along, while Madharaasi as a whole struggled to live up to his onscreen charm. Sivakarthikeyan brings all the firepower in AR Murugadoss' terrific return to form

Madharaasi, thankfully, comes as a saving grace, showing how impactful action can be when propelled by well-written pathos. It also shows how writers can weave in social themes without pandering to the crowd. Madharaasi speaks about a real danger that Tamil Nadu should be wary of gun culture and Murugadoss makes a compelling case on what our reality would look like when such weapons end up in the wrong hands(more)
