Coolie Censor Update: What's next for the Rajinikanth, Aamir Khan starrer?

PUBLISHED DATE | 21/Aug/2025

Recently Sun Pictures moved Madras High Court, after its big release Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Shruthi Haasan, Aamir Khan, was given an 'A' (adults only) certificate by the Censor Board for “excessive violence.” The makers argued that Coolie has less violence compared to films like KGF or their own movie Beast (2022).

They also pointed out that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India had offered a 'U/A' certificate if further cuts were made, but the team chose not to trim more scenes ahead of its August 14 release. With CBFC's appeal tribunal which normally reviews such cases no longer in place, Sun Pictures had to move High Court for relief.

In court, Sun TV’s lawyers pushed for urgent hearing, but the counsel countered that the movie was already certified and released, so there was no real urgency. The Madras High Court has now issued notice to the Censor Board and adjourned the matter to August 25, 2025 (Monday).
